Formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961, the original group comprised singer-musician-composer and bandleader Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Wilson neighbor David Marks appeared on their first four albums and was a member from 1962 to 1963 as a temporary replacement for Jardine, who had left the group to pursue a career in dentistry.
On their first few studio albums, the group primarily played surf music, but this changed after 1964 as their songs became more sophisticated and autobiographical. The 1965 album Today! particularly represented this shift in sound. Bruce Johnston joined the group that same year. Session drummer Hal Blaine is quoted: "We all studied in conservatories; we were trained musicians. We thought it was a fluke at first, but then we realized Brian was writing these incredible songs. This was not just a young kid writing about high school and surfing."
Following their most esteemed work, Pet Sounds (1966), the band became symbols of psychedelic counterculture. The highly anticipated follow-up, Smile, was left unfinished, and Brian soon relinquished his creative hold on the group. A trilogy of lo-fi releases followed: Smiley Smile (1967), Wild Honey (1967), and Friends (1968). Brian would not be credited as a primary composer for any Beach Boys album until 1977's Love You, an album on the fringe of synth-pop, new wave, and punk.
In Brian's absence, the Beach Boys still managed to release music that was regarded favorably by fans and critics despite poor sales: Sunflower (1970) and Surf's Up (1971). South African musicians Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar played and sang with the band on the next two albums: Carl & the Passions - So Tough (1972), and Holland (1973).
Many changes in both musical style and personnel have occurred in their sometimes-stormy career: Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug addiction; the deaths of Dennis Wilson in 1983 and Carl Wilson in 1998; and continuing legal battles among surviving members of the group. With the release of 1974's Endless Summer they became a more popular touring act, playing their greatest hits. They have recorded 36 Billboard Top 40 hits (including four number-one singles), have had over 100 million sales, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Barbie
The Beach Boys Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Turned down dates with Eddie and Todd
Everyone loves her, she's lovely to see
But Barbie, my Barbie, she loves only me
Barbie, Barbie, still in her teens
Bell of the parties, a tom boy in jeans
She's everything that a girl wants to be
This is a year, we have prayed for
This is a moment sublime
All of our lives we have waited for
For this one perfect time
Barbie, Barbie, always I knew
Can come here for one moment with you
Everyone loves you and everyone knows
That Barbie, my Barbie, you love only me
You love only me
You love only me
You love only me
The Beach Boys' song "Barbie" is a sweet love song which describes how the singer's Barbie doll is loved by all but remains committed to only him. The song's lyrics describe how Barbie, the "queen of the crew," has turned down dates with other boys like Eddie and Todd, making her a source of admiration by everyone. However, despite her popularity, she loves only the singer. The lyrics seem to suggest that Barbie is not only beautiful but also athletic and cool, as she is described as someone who wears jeans and is a "tom boy." The singer sees her as everything a girl wants to be, and he feels lucky to have her love.
The song's music goes well with its lyrics. The opening guitar riff is catchy and the vocals are lovely, making it a great pop tune. The chorus line, "Barbie, my Barbie, she loves only me" is repeated three times, which is sung in such an upbeat way that it sticks in your head. The song's rhythm is fast and danceable, and you can easily imagine it being played at a high school dance in the 60s.
Overall, "Barbie" is a fun, innocent, and romantic song that captures the teenage love experience of the time. Its catchy tune and adorable lyrics have made it a classic and a favorite among Beach Boys fans.

Distant Lover / Marvin Gaye
Distant lover, lover
(Lover, lover, lover)
So many miles away
Heaven knows that I long for you
Every night, every night
I plan, sometimes I dance
Through the day
Distant lover, lover
(Lover, lover, lover)
You should think about me
And say a prayer for me
Please, please baby
Think about me sometimes
Think about me here
Here in misery
Misery
As I reminisce, oh baby
Through our joyful summer together
The promises we made
All the daily letters
Then, all of a sudden
Everything seemed to explode
Now, I gaze out my window
Sugar, down a lonesome road
Distant lover
(Lover, lover, lover)
Sugar, how can you treat my heart
So mean and cruel
Sugar, sugar
That every moment that I spent with you
I treasure every like it was a precious jewel
(Please) Lord have mercy
Please, come back, baby
Somethin' I wanna say
When you left
You took all of me with you
Do you wanna hear me scream
Please please oh please baby
Come back and hold me, girl

I feel like I will never be able to fully express how much I love this song. Lyrically it's simple (but utterly sweet), but god, Brian Wilson's voice. It's angelic here, and I've literally never heard anything else like it.
