The bit that John finally
Got, just after that, then we will do both
Of the do what you wanna do
Do what you wanna do
Do what you wanna do, do what you wanna do
Do what you wanna do, do what you wanna do
Do what you wanna do, do what you wanna do
I feel it, I feel it, I feel it, oh baby now
I get it, I get it, I get it baby, free now
You gotta get free now baby, free now
You gotta get free now baby, free now
You gotta get free now baby, free now
You gotta get free now baby, free now
You gotta get free now baby, free now
You gotta get free now baby, free now
You gotta get free now

Baby, free now you gotta get free now
Baby, free now you gotta get free now
Free now you gotta get free now
Baby, free now you gotta get free now
Baby, free now you gotta get free now
Baby, free now you gotta get free now
Baby, free now you gotta get free now

Sounds of the Mersey Tunnel

Baby, free now you gotta get free now

Baby, free now you gotta get free now
Baby, free now you gotta get free now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Beatles' song "Free Now" are quite repetitive and open to interpretation. The overall theme seems to be about the desire for freedom and the liberation from constraints. The repeated phrase "Do what you wanna do" emphasizes the importance of personal autonomy and the need to follow one's own desires and dreams.

The first stanza suggests that John has finally understood something significant, which leads to a realization that they should both do whatever they want to do. This can be seen as a call to break free from societal norms and expectations. The repetition of the phrase "Do what you wanna do" reinforces this message.

In the second stanza, the singer expresses a sense of feeling and understanding. They feel the desire for freedom, and they "get it." The line "You gotta get free now baby, free now" further emphasizes the urgency and importance of achieving that freedom. The repetition of the phrase "You gotta get free now baby, free now" encourages the listener to take action and break free from whatever is holding them back.

The final stanza adds a layer of atmosphere with the mention of the "Sounds of the Mersey Tunnel." The Mersey Tunnel is a tunnel in Liverpool, where The Beatles originate from. This reference may symbolize a journey towards freedom or a return to their roots.

Overall, "Free Now" can be interpreted as a liberating anthem, urging listeners to embrace their individual desires, obtain freedom, and break free from societal constraints.

Free as a bird
It's the next best thing to be
Free as a bird
Home, home and dry
Like a homing bird, I'll fly
As a bird on wings

Whatever happened to
The life that we once knew?
Can we really live without each other?
Where did we lose the touch
That seemed to mean so much?
It always made me feel so—

Free as a bird
It's the next best thing to be
Free as a bird

Home (Home), home and dry
Like a homing bird, I'll fly
As a bird on wings

Whatever happened to
The love that we once knew?
Always made me feel so free

(Ah)
(Ah)
(Ah)

Free as a bird
It's the next best thing to be
Free as a bird
Free as a bird
Free as a bird

Considering there are now some amazing AI clean ups of John Lennon's demo tape of this song maybe it's time to polish up this song for a re release.

@cdz9400

I think the slightly scratchy recording of John's voice in this is actually perfect.

@YannD

Actually what you're hearing here is not the original 1995 mix but a remix done in 2015 (I'm surprised there's no mention of this in the video description) when the "Beatles 1+" video collection was released. The isolation of John's voice is slightly better than on the original mix, and among other things, they used a different take of George's lead vocal. But still, re-doing it with 2023 technology for an official release would certainly have been a good idea (there are some excellent "fan versions" available here and there).

@leokimvideo

@@YannD 2015 was sadly a long time ago now, The ability to make better is massive different now. If the song was fixed up to today's AI standards Johns voice would be completely crystal clear.

@barrybickel7474

Came here to say this… a remaster using the new tech they’re using on ‘Now and Then’ needs to happen

@1w72st

I think it provides a haunting quality to the song. One of those unintended special effects that The Beatles stumbled upon many times (as in Tomorrow Never Knows). It's perfect as is.

@sgtpepprs3

Around 2:30 is a reference to the car crash in A Day in the Life if you didn't state that already.

@TrailBlazer65

+InRainbows1 You found some I didn't notice and left out some that I did so there must be maybe hundreds of song references in this video!
