No Name
The Better World Lyrics

No Name
(Matt Coban)

I can understand the way you thought of me when I was in your head
You could take my hand and lead me through the walls you built to stand
I can be your friend, help you out in need when times are bad
I know that you don't have the reasons
Nothing you do is in my face
I wish you never thought of leaving

And I appreciate, the smiles you gave me when I was astray
I can never forget, drinking by the bridge you left me there
And I took all of the blame, standing there in jealousy again
I know that you don't have the reasons

Nothing you do is in my face
I wish you never thought of leaving

I know that you don't have the reasons
Nothing you do is in my face
I wish you never thought of leaving
I know that you had all the reasons
But now you're gone, you left me in tears
What will I do when you start leaving?

Oh no, and you aint coming back
Oh I wish that you wished you'd come back

Overall Meaning

The song β€œNo Name” by The Better World is a reflection on a relationship that has ended. The lyrics seem to express the singer’s regret about the person leaving and the loss that was experienced. The singer reflects on the way the other person saw him when they were together, and acknowledges how their perception may have changed when apart. Despite this, the singer still wants to be there for the other person in any capacity he can, even if it is just as a friend.

The mention of β€œwalls you built to stand” may be an allusion to emotional barriers that were erected by the other person that the singer now recognizes, but was not able to see at the time. The line, β€œI know that you had all the reasons, but now you're gone, you left me in tears,” suggests that the singer did not fully understand the reasons behind the break up and is still struggling to come to terms with it.

The repeated line, β€œI wish you never thought of leaving,” emphasizes the singer’s longing for the relationship to continue, and perhaps suggests that the other person initiated the end of the relationship. The final lines, β€œOh no, and you ain’t coming back, oh I wish that you wished you’d come back,” reveal the singer’s painful acknowledgment that the relationship is truly over, and there is no chance of reconciliation.
