Plans
The Birds Of Tokyo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We made plans to kiss the sun at night
Hopeless dreamers, hopeless types
Shedding skin you show your beauty scars
Don't forget me or who you are

You know this don't feel right
Who knows what we feel?
I just met you I can read your thoughts
What they tell me is what I want
I'll keep you guessing keep you wanting more
'Cause where we're going no one knows

You know this don't feel right
Who knows this could feel right

I just met you, I swear I read your thoughts
So don't forget me or what you want

Light up the stage, make your move, give me something
So I can dance in your light and to your rhythm

Soon it unfolds who we are in this masquerade of stars
Tear off the mask, the face you hide is what I'm missing

We made plans to kiss the sun at night
Hopeless dreamers, hopeless types
One was turning, one was standing still
I won't forget what was promised here

You know this don't feel right
Who knows what we feel?

Overall Meaning

The Birds Of Tokyo's song "Plans" is a contemplative track that focuses on the excitement and trepidation of new beginnings. The opening lines "We made plans to kiss the sun at night, Hopeless dreamers, hopeless types," invite listeners to participate in the imagination of setting seemingly impossible scenarios as goals. The lyrics encourage the listener to be unconventional and daring, as they toss out the rules, shed their inhibitions and venture into the unknown.

As the lyrics progress, we begin to see the vulnerability of the characters. They are flawed, they have scars that make them beautiful, and they struggle to reconcile their desires with the reality of the situation they find themselves in. The lines "Don't forget me or who you are" is the singer urging their partner to remain true to themselves and not get lost in the excitement of the moment. The song's theme is further enhanced by the lines "Soon it unfolds who we are in this masquerade of stars, Tear off the mask, the face you hide is what I'm missing," which reveal a deeper connection with the person they've just met, a connection that cannot be faked or hidden away.

In summary, "Plans" is a song about two people who jump headfirst into an adventure, leaving caution behind while recognizing the risks involved. It's a song about being authentic, throwing away masks, and living in the moment, however brief, before it fades away.

This song never gets old.

Still the song of the decade for me. Almost ten years later, this still encapsulates all the emotions and desires of this time well. Birds of Tokyo are also one of the best true rock bands of the decade. The Aussie music scene killed it during the 2010's!

Good song, but you definitely need to expand your horizons.

โ€‹@Greg Cunningham who are you to tell someone how to feel or relate to music? Do you and let others do for themselves without judgement.

@GregoryCunningham

@Shars Nothing wrong with expanding your knowledge. You might try it.

@skoonz

I heard this song for the first time whilst driving home after a terrible day at work, and I was lost for breath.. All I could think of was how beautiful the song was, how unimportant my crappy day was, and how this song will be touching the broken hearts of people with bigger worries than my own.. Brilliant!
