The Black Cat
The Black Cat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Would you all see me coming up, baby from
Miles away
I've been chained to that mama
Since way back in the day
But now I'm here
And I'm a long way from home

Oh, when you hear me coming round
Don't be stepping on my
Black cat bones

Well I will do certain things that
No other man would ever do
Might got your number
But they ain't got to charm to call the room
But I'm here
I'm a long way from home

Yeah, when you hear me coming round
Don't be stepping on my
Black cat bones

And I say
Come on all you ladies
All get down with me
I'm the meanest-talking man
That you ever gonna see
But I'm here
I'm a long way from home

Yeah, when you hear me coming round
Don't be stepping on
Black cat bones

Oh, when you hear me coming round

Don't be stepping on my
Black cat bones

Overall Meaning

The Black Cat's song "The Black Cat" is a bluesy declaration of power, freedom, and warning. The singer boasts of his ability to do certain things no other man would do, yet simultaneously warns listeners not to "step on his black cat bones." The phrase "black cat bones" is a reference to hoodoo, a type of African American folk magic. The bones of a black cat were often used in hoodoo rituals to bring luck or to put a curse on someone. By warning others not to step on his black cat bones, the singer is asserting his power and warning others not to mess with him.

The lyrics also suggest that the singer has been held back in the past by someone, referred to as "mama," but is now free and a long way from home. This could be interpreted as the singer breaking free from oppressive forces, perhaps even societal or racial ones. The line "might got your number, but they ain't got the charm to call the room" implies that the singer has a certain charm or charisma that no one else has, enabling him to do what others cannot.

Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of a confident, powerful figure who has overcome obstacles and has the charm and luck of hoodoo on his side. However, he also warns others not to cross him, as he has the power to curse them with his black cat bones.

for those of you who have to take notes on this for an assignment (like me) here are my notes. they might not be completely right but this is kind of what I understand from listening to this
“ i will unburden my soul”
Liked to feed and caring for the animals
Married early
Him and his wife had birds, gold fish, a dog, rabbits, a small monkey, and a black cat
Cat was called pluto
His personality started to change he became more moody irritable, yelled and hit his wife
Started to mistreat his animals except pluto
One day he got drunk and pluto bit him, got very mad
Cut the cats eye out
Got upset and even more drunk after that
Saying how he wants to violate the law because it is a law
Hung the cat because it loved him and because it had done nothing wrong
Woke up to find his house was set on fire
One wall in his house was still intact and on the wall hung the cat with the rope still around its neck
But the cat was originally hung in the garden
Then got another cat that looks similar to the black cat
Started to hate that cat
The new cat was also missing an eye
Cant sleep at night anymore
Starts to hate all life its self
The tripped hi on accident, he got really mad, took the axe and tried to kill the cat, but the wife stopped his hand , got even more mad and swung the axe into her head
Hid the body
Hid her in the cellar walls
Slept great after the cat somehow disappeared and killed his wife
The death of his wife barely affected him, he just shurgged it off
The guy was boasting to the police as they were on their way out about how well made the house and the walls are and how sturdy they were
Started to hear howling coming from the place he hid her
The police heard it too and started to take apart the wall
The body flopped out
Finds out he hid the cat with the body and thats what was making the noise.

Not the sort of story you expect to read to kids before bed but ok… I suppose it’s not as bad as some of the original versions of fairytales.
