After reflecting a bit...this scene is iconic on multiple levels. I wonder if Dinero coached Phoenix on how to contain a quiet rage before it waterfalls...the way he cemented his legendary role in Taxi Driver. I also wonder as I go back and watch Dineros face in this scene...the quiet disgust. Did he rematerialize his past role and reimagine the character growing old and learning to stabilize his own psychopathy in a parallel universe. Dinero was underrated in this. Just by sitting there...his face and micro gestures are containing so much control, dialogue, and backstory going on in his head. Like he purposely is playing being a bad actor...who is acting like a too talented actor...thats not that talented.

At first I thought he sucked...then I realized...he NEVER sucks. Everything is perfection, intentional, and well thought/fleshed out. 🏆.

It gave me more to think about as I tried to ignore that its actually HIM playing this role. It's ironic on epic levels.

In comic book land, Taxi Driver has morphed into The Joker and kills himself on stage with the whole world watching, applauding. They both finally find peace.

The Joker initially went on stage to kill himself...then decides to kill "Himself": the base to his original personality creation and the only thing that links him back to his villain arch in history. Dinero represents that on multiple levels. His casting for this is supreme.❤.

Nah. He’s not thinking about manipulating anyone. He doesn’t acknowledge anything good in anyone. He doesn’t acknowledge there’s someone human out there, he feels the pain of not communicating with anyone remotely the same in soul.
He also realises that Murray, the father figure in his life, was just like the rest of the ordinary people that walked all over him while he was laying on the road, was beaten up and was feeling absolutely crazy of his bitterness and pain and misfortune. Murray wasn’t even ignoring him, he was mocking him in front of his face. Arthur wasn’t only feeling painful because of EVERYTHING that has happened in his life, but he was also reminded of how everyone wasn’t even trying to empathise. Of course, it’s led to the death of Murray. 😂

When Joker says "You just wanted to make fun of me", he has the most sinister face. The part right after Murray started saying you caused all this trouble and "you're laughing, you're laughing". Right there Joaquin Phoenix starts a series of head movements that are so filled with rage. The music gets really intense right then too. It was so great. He reminded me of my ex-girlfriend who had a serious problem with rage.

When my ex-girlfriend, a bona fide psychopath, used to have her episodes, she would do that head movement and do that same breath holding right before she would go nuts. It was a short demonic moment right before Joker says "How about another joke, Murray?". There is no dialogue it is just Joker holding his breath and his head is bouncing around. It looks like 1,000 malicious thoughts went through his head all at once. And he controlled it all to tell that last joke. Wicked intense!

This is an "all time" great movie scene material.

I have so much love for this movie! 🩷 the acting, the writing everything!!! I love how joker mentions that nobody is civil anymore that everybody is so quick to scream at each other because it’s true. The show is about people's rejection of actual reality in favor of their own take. By this point he didn't care anymore to try and reject Murray's presumptions. There's an earlier scene where he finds a photo signed T.W or something and he just throws it away. It's not important, no one around him care about what actually happens anyway.

@Anmol Dani The whole point of the movie is that Arthur wasn't born a psychopath. He was mentally ill, but harmless. But when the world does nothing but hurt a man for as long as he can remember, how can he be expected to do anything but want to hurt it back? The movie brought a lot of parallels to Frankenstein for me. The Creature wasn't a threat until his environment convinced him that the only way he could assert any sort of control over his surroundings was to lash out and hurt others just like he had been hurt, much like Arthur himself.

Just for the record, the three Wayne employees he killed WERE awful pieces of shit. Murray may not have deserved a full on execution, but he wasn't a nice guy either. Joker's not wrong when he says people are awful, but that's partly because he had the misfortune of being surrounded by shitty people, Gary and Arthur's neighbor being the exceptions.

Joaqin's portrayal of Joker in this movie and particularly in this scene are just masterful! Joker's body language throughout this scene is a great indicator of what mental state he is in before and after the murder. That nervous foot tapping right after he shots Murray followed by the maniacal laughter and placing one more bullet into Murray's lifeless body, the indecisive toss of the gun, the goofy weird little dance and facing the camera at the end, perfectly depicts his irreversible descend into the madness.

The idea that people don't care about others, but instantly switch modes when they see someone dead on the news is sad.
We recognize when something is sad as soon as someone else says it is. We never actually pay attention to those things, we only pay attention to them because someone brought it up.
Very similar to Remembrance Day. We barely acknowledge our soldiers who fought and died for us, and we only acknowledge them for one day, and we forget about them for weeks, months, years. We NEVER pay attention to those things, we only notice them because somebody else acknowledged it.

You can see in his eyes that he’s just viscerally horrified for a moment. But he shows none of that when he stabs his coworker in the neck - maybe because he’d been able to psych himself up for the stabbing, while shooting Murray was pure impulse? This is an incredible piece of cinema. The outrageousness, it almost encapsulates, what are we as humans? So many apex predators of a species being in close quarters in cities, difference of opinion, differences in humor. This movie was so important because inside most people, there is at least some small part of us that wants to just end the 'awful' people in the world.
