Laser Life
The Blood Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, team machine!
I'm a pound of flesh in a drum machine's dream
We watch crabs and lobsters eat a dead cops throat
And stuff our mouths with gutted stereos
Oh, team machine!
Every single piano I've ever met in my life
Never sounded as good as melted casio keys
Burning in a sea that sings out in 3-D
Oh, that laser rain kept me up all night again
Scratching at the windows like a bright colored beast
Howling at the dawn like an adulterous priest
Shake your hands like they're full of feathers
Shake your wings like they're laced with sound
Shake your skin like a scrambled TV
Gnash your teeth like a flamingo swarm
I think my night unplugged its life
Digital sunrise!
Digital sunset!
Oh, team machine!
The world's got no end and it's got no beginning
Now I'm coughing up maracas and tambourines
Looking over cliffs of eternity
Shake your hands like they're full of disaster
Shake your wings like they're painted with tar
Shake your skin like it's sewn with insects
Gnash your teeth like an exploding car
And if your night unplugs its life blame it on the laser rain
And if your life unplugs its eyes blame it on the laser rain
Because you can't blame the sun, it's been bought and sold to a day that's never dawning

And you can't blame the sky, it collapsed twelve times, now it's buried in a digital coffin
So climb out your windowsill as the drum machines laugh to themselves

Overall Meaning

The Blood Brothers' song "Laser Life" is a surreal and apocalyptic depiction of a world where the boundaries of reality are blurred, and technology holds an unnerving dominance over human existence. The opening lines of "Oh, team machine! I'm a pound of flesh in a drum machine's dream" convey a sense of being trapped inside a dystopian society, where individuals have become nothing more than components in a monstrous machine. The reference to crabs and lobsters eating a dead cop's throat is a macabre image that solidifies the feeling of being trapped, as if the world has ceased to function in any recognizable way.

The song then shifts to an imagery of melting Casio keys and laser rain, creating a vivid and otherworldly soundscape. The singer is trying to shake off the trappings of this world and break free of the machines' grip by shaking their wings, hands, skin, and teeth. The repeated phrase "shake your..." reinforces the idea of shaking off the shackles of conformity and asserting one's individuality.

The final lines suggest that the machines have already won, as they "laugh to themselves" while humans are left to deal with the consequences of this loss of control. Overall, "Laser Life" conveys a dystopian vision of a world where technology has become all-consuming, and humanity is essentially lost.

@taylordcraig

I sat outside their second last show in Victoria, BC before they disbanded.
I was too young to get into the bar.
The next day they played in Vancouver and then that was it.
One of their GF at the time gave me this CD out of the trailer.
The Blood Brothers were awesome.
