Against All Odds
The Blue Rubatos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How can I just let you walk away
Just let you leave without a trace?
When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all
How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave?
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Ooh, take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against the odds
And that's what I've got to face
I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Now Take a look at me now
'Cause that's just an empty space
But to wait for you is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now
'Cause I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds

It's the chance I've got to take
Take a look at me now

Overall Meaning

The Blue Rubatos' song "Against All Odds" is a heartfelt ballad that illustrates the struggle of letting go of a romantic relationship. The lyrics present the internal turmoil of the singer who is grappling with the fact that their significant other has left without a trace. It is clear that the singer still deeply cares for their lover and cannot fathom how they could have left them behind after all the shared laughter, pain, and tears. The chorus repeats twice the phrase "So take a look at me now," which serves as a plea to the lover to return and see the emptiness that remains in the absence of their presence.

The bridge of the song expresses the singer's continued longing for their lover to return, and the pain that they feel from not being able to express all of what they need to say. The final repetition of the chorus is a declaration that they will still be waiting for their lover, even though it goes against all odds. "Against All Odds" is a beautiful song that portrays the heartache and desolation that often accompanies the end of a romantic relationship.

I can appreciate both versions. I actually like this one because my daughter introduced me to it, not knowing that it was a remake of Phill Collins and we ended up bonding over this song. That was around 5 years ago. She's since left the nest. I miss her living with me.

@wizzard4063

This song hits for anyone who has been ghosted by someone who you have invested in emotionally. There is no closure. Just that empty space that lives forever where they used to live.
