Crosstown Traffic
The Bolshoi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

you jump in front of my car when you,
you know all the time that
ninety miles an hour, boy
is the speed i drive

you tell me it’s alright, you don’t mind a little pain
you say you just want me to take you for a drive
you’re just like crosstown traffic
so hard to get through to you
crosstown traffic
i don’t need to worry over you
crosstown traffic
all you do is slow me down
while i’m tryin’ to get on the other side of town

i’m not the only soul
who’s accused of hit and run
tire tracks all across your back
i can see you had your fun

but darlin’ can’t you see
my signal turn from green to red
and with you i can see
a traffic jam straight up ahead

you’re just like crosstown traffic
so hard to get through to you
crosstown traffic
i don’t need to worry over you
crosstown traffic
all you do is slow me down
and i got something much better on the other side of town

you’re just like crosstown traffic
coming, i'm coming
here i come
crosstown traffic
crosstown traffic
so hard to get through to you

crosstown traffic
crosstown traffic...

Overall Meaning

The Bolshoi's Crosstown Traffic explores a love-hate relationship between two individuals, where one person is repeatedly getting in the way of the other's goals and ambitions. The singer, driving at a breakneck speed of ninety miles per hour, is confronted by their lover who intentionally jumps in front of their car, causing a near-accident. Despite the danger, the lover assures the singer that he/she is not afraid of a little pain, and wants nothing more than to go on a joyride with them.

However, the singer sees the lover as nothing more than a hindrance, and compares them to the eponymous crosstown traffic that impedes their progress. The lover is an obstacle to be overcome, like a difficult road block or disruptive force. The singer is tired of being slowed down and having to deal with tire marks on their back, a metaphor for being hurt and left behind. They can sense a traffic jam ahead, and this motivates them to move on to greener pastures.

In conclusion, Crosstown Traffic is a powerful song that explores the archetype of two people who have different goals and motivations, and whose conflicting desires lead them towards a love-hate relationship. It uses vivid metaphors of speed, danger and roadblocks to create a memorable and intense experience for the listener.
