(Do-wat, a-do-wat, do-wat, a-do-wat.)
(Do-wat, a-do-wat, do-wat, a-do-wat.)
(Shoobee doobee-wah, do-wat, be-bobbee, bobbee.)
(Shoobee doobee-wah, do-wat, be-bobbee, bobbee.)
(Shoobee doobee-wah, do-wat, be-bobbee, bobbee.)
Cry baby.
Cry baby.
Cry baby.

My baby, (uh-oh,)
Is such a cry baby. (Uh-oh.)
Is such a cry baby;
Crying all the time,
All the time.
Cry baby.
Cry baby.

My baby, (uh-oh,)
Is such a cry baby. (Uh-oh.)
Is such a cry baby;
Crying all the time,
All the time.
All the time.

When the raindrops start to fall
Tears fall from my eyes.
Then my heart starts to call;
Don't you realize,
Realize?

My baby, (uh-oh,)
Is such a cry baby. (Uh-oh.)
Is such a cry baby;
Crying all the time.

When the raindrops start to fall
Tears fall from my eyes.
Then my heart starts to call;
Don't you realize,
Realize?

My baby, (uh-oh,)
Is such a cry baby. (Uh-oh.)
Is such a cry baby;
Crying all the ti-i-i-ime,
Ti-i-i-ime,
Ti-i-i-ime.

(You big ol' cry baby.)

Overall Meaning

The Bonnie Sisters' song Cry Baby is about a lover who can't seem to stop crying. The song expresses the singer's frustration over her lover's constant sobbing. The repetitive chorus, "cry baby, cry baby," reinforces this sentiment. The lyrics suggest that the lover's tears are triggered by rain, which is a common symbol for sadness and melancholy. The singer encourages her lover to "realize" the impact of his constant tears on their relationship, yet it seems as though her requests fall on deaf ears. The song ends with the teasing line, "you big ol' cry baby," indicating that the singer may have grown tired of her lover's tears.

The song speaks to the universal human experience of navigating emotions in relationships. It can be challenging to balance empathy and compassion with frustration and exasperation. The internal conflict between these emotions is mirrored in the catchy, upbeat melody of Cry Baby, which masks a more complicated emotional landscape.

Line by Line Meaning

(Do-wat, a-do-wat, do-wat, a-do-wat.)
The song begins with the repetition of meaningless syllables to establish a catchy, rhythmic tune.

(Shoobee doobee-wah, do-wat, be-bobbee, bobbee.)
The chorus features more scat-like syllables, adding to the playful, upbeat nature of the song.

Cry baby.
The titular phrase is repeated three times throughout the song to highlight the central theme of a whiny, overly-emotional partner.

My baby, (uh-oh,)
The artist is likely referring to a romantic partner, using the nickname 'baby' to express affection.

Is such a cry baby. (Uh-oh.)
The partner is described as overly emotional, demonstrating a tendency to cry frequently and excessively.

Crying all the time,
The partner's emotional outbursts are so frequent that they are occurring 'all the time,' or nearly constantly.

When the raindrops start to fall
The singer may be using 'raindrops' as a metaphor for difficult or trying times; when things get tough, their partner becomes increasingly emotional.

Tears fall from my eyes.
The artist's partner's crying has an effect on them, causing them to also feel emotional and potentially cry as well.

Then my heart starts to call;
The artist's emotions become too much to handle when their partner is crying, leading them to feel a strong urge to comfort and soothe them.

Don't you realize,
The artist wants their partner to understand how their constant crying is affecting them, likely hoping for a change in behavior or attitude.

My baby, (uh-oh,)
Once again, the singer refers to their partner as 'baby,' signaling that their love for them remains despite their frustrating tendencies.

Is such a cry baby. (Uh-oh.)
The song concludes with another repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the partner's emotional nature and potentially calling for them to change their behavior.

(You big ol' cry baby.)
This final line is likely intended to be playful or teasing, poking fun at the partner's crying in a lighthearted way rather than truly criticizing them.

The woman on the right, Sylvia, was my Aunt's best friend in high school. At age 15 in 1950 Catholic Sylvia eloped with Catholic Tony, my aunt's secret crush. Sylvia and Tony made it to Elkton, MD, got married, ran out of money, and were sent back to New York by the police. In 1960 Sylvia asked my aunt to testify that the marriage was not consummated so that God could let her off the hook and they could get a divorce. My aunt and I saw Sylvia and her act at Allan Fried's rock n' roll show at the NY Academy of Music in 1956

I just picked up "Cry Baby" on the Rainbow Records label, along with at least another dozen other hard-to-find 45's from the 50's., at a second hand book store.
