Visions
The Breathing Effect Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shake the dust out of your head
Its quiet now
And we can hear ourselves
What do we have to do today
What do we have to do
Think about the things
We couldn't live without
If I empty out my mind
Will I leave my soul behind
All that I see
Comes from insides me
Breathe into the flame
And watch it grow to what you can't contain
Graceful for chaos
Chaos
Sleeping in the rain
A bottle to survive
Drives you insane
And then you drift off
Visions
For weeks you
Let me paint in love some light
We're awake now
Can we go outside
Will I ever finish what I make
Can I ever love what I create
Maybe not this year
Maybe not this life
Breathe into the flame
And watch it grow to what you can't contain
Graceful for chaos
Chaos
Sleeping in the rain
A bottle to survive
Drives you insane
And then you drift off

Visions
For weeks you

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of The Breathing Effect's song "Visions" shake us out of our mental lethargy and invite us to engage our senses. "Shake the dust out of your head / It's quiet now / And we can hear ourselves" - the first two lines suggest a need for focus and clarity, while the third line is an invitation to listen to our inner voice. The next few lines are introspective, questioning our priorities and what we cherish. "What do we have to do today / What do we have to do / Think about the things / We couldn't live without." Here, the singer asks us to ponder on the things that are most important to us.

The singer then shifts to a more existential thought process. "If I empty out my mind / Will I leave my soul behind?" The line suggests that there is a potential risk in self-reflection: that by letting go of our thoughts, we may also unwittingly let go of some integral part of ourselves. The singer, however, finds strength in this vulnerability: "All that I see / Comes from inside me." The lines put forth the idea that everything - our experiences, our emotions, our perceptions - emerge from within us.

The subsequent lyrics are poetic and metaphorical, but arguably less cohesive. "Breathe into the flame / And watch it grow to what you can't contain / Graceful for chaos / Chaos / Sleeping in the rain / A bottle to survive / Drives you insane / And then you drift off / Visions / For weeks you" - the lines talk of growing beyond our limitations, appreciating the beauty in unpredictability, finding solace and madness in coping mechanisms, and finally, experiencing hallucinations or flights of imagination.
