Pieces
The Bridges Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

time isnt telling me a thing its playing with my heart
im tearing at the seams you on the other hand choosing
what to understand is old

CHORUS:im sure you know how we always find ourselves
in the deepest corner of the darkest hour we can't
get much louder than this we always lose our hearts
in the strangest places picking up the pieces we break
i just wont tell you about it i just wont tell you
about it ijust wont tell you about it i just wont tell you about

love isnt costing me a thing you're hearing what
you want you want me so it seems time is the risk we
take holding on to one mistake let go
(let go) CHORUS: I JUST WONT TELL YOU ABOUT IT (7 TIMES)

OH BREAK IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT BOY SAY IT LIKE YOU'VE
SAID IT BEFORE YOU'RE JUST IN TIME TO MAKE A MISTAKE
HAD ALL THE TIME I CAN TAKE

CHORUS I JUST WONT TELL YOU ABOUT IT (4 TIMES )

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Bridges' song "Pieces" explore the complexities of relationships and the struggles of communication. The first line "time isn't telling me a thing, it's playing with my heart" suggests that even though time is passing, it's not providing any clarity or answers about the emotions at play. The following line "I'm tearing at the seams, you on the other hand choosing what to understand is old" suggests that while one person is struggling and falling apart, the other is choosing to ignore or overlook the issues between them, which leads to further disconnection and misunderstanding.

The chorus "I'm sure you know how we always find ourselves in the deepest corner of the darkest hour, we can't get much louder than this" suggests that the relationship is at its breaking point and emotions are running high, but communication is still hindered, leading to an inability to find resolution or connect with each other. The following lines "we always lose our hearts in the strangest places, picking up the pieces we break, I just won't tell you about it" further emphasize the difficulty in understanding each other and the pain that results when things fall apart.

The bridge "Oh break it like you mean it boy, say it like you've said it before, you're just in time to make a mistake, had all the time I can take" speaks to the frustration and fatigue that comes with trying to salvage a relationship that may not be working. The singer seems to be ready to move on and wants to end the cycle of pain and confusion that they have been caught up in.

Overall, the lyrics to "Pieces" are a testament to the challenge of communication in relationships and the pain that can arise when that communication breaks down.

This is one of the many songs on MTVU that helped me through grieving my fathers passing back in '08. I was suffering from insomnia, but music healed me.

Brings me back to 2008. I was 16 and for the life of me I can't remember how I first discovered this song. I ended up downloading it and listening to it all day while walking through the woods with some neighborhood friends. I sure wish I had known how beautiful those moments were at the time.
