Better Man
The Brown Derbies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Put on my blue suede shoes and
I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain

W.C. Handy
Won't you look down over me
Yeah, I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be

Then I'm walking in Memphis
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel?

I saw the ghost of Elvis on Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through

Now, security did not see him
They just hovered round his tomb
But there's a pretty little thing
Waiting for the King
And she's down in the jungle room

When I was walking in Memphis
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel?

Now, they've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green, be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
But boy you got a prayer in Memphis

Now, Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
She said, "Tell me are you a Christian, child?"
And I said, "Ma'am, I am tonight!"

Walking in Memphis
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel?

Walking in Memphis
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel?

Put on my blue suede shoes and I
Boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain

Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain

Overall Meaning

The Brown Derbies's song Better Man tells the story of a man who travels to Memphis, Tennessee, in the United States, to find inspiration for his music. The singer wears his blue suede shoes, a nod to Elvis Presley, and boards a plane to the โ€œland of the Delta Bluesโ€ in the pouring rain. He then addresses W.C. Handy, often referred to as the "Father of the Blues," asking him to inspire him through his journey in Memphis.

As the singer walks along Beale Street, he sees the ghost of Elvis Presley on Union Avenue and followed him up to the gates of Graceland. The security around Elvis's tomb did not notice the ghost, and the personification of a pretty little thing waiting for the King is mentioned, who is down in the jungle room. The jungle room is a reference to a part of Elvisโ€™s Graceland mansion, decorated with tropical plants and animal decor.

The singer also describes the food and music scene of Memphis, which includes catfish on the table and gospel music, likely referencing the history of African-American musicians and culture in the city. The story ends with the singer singing with all his might at the Hollywood club and being asked if he is a Christian. The song can be interpreted more broadly as a search for spiritual and musical inspiration in a land full of history and culture, with Memphis and its musical significance being the focal point of the story.

Thousands of acapella tracks later, this is still #1 on the list. Just a classic.

These guys are awesome.. I thought this song was awesome when Martin Page did it.. Big thumbs up..

@MatthewSchnupp

Pinned it down ... What makes this so good is that you kept the sacred feeling of the original. So many other acapella versions try to alter/increase the subtle thoughtfulness of the tempo and make it "pop". When you open your soul to the aid of the world/beyond, it doesn't "pop". :)

@dianeponcher9465

Best a capella version I've heard - kept it soulful AND rhythmic!
