Do The Strand

A fabulous creation
A danceable solution
To teenage revolution
Do the Strand love
When you feel love
It's the new way
That's why we say
Do it on the tables
Quaglino's place or Mabel's
Slow and gentle
Sentimental
All styles served here
Louis Seize he prefer
Laissez-faire Le Strand
Tired of the tango
Fed up with fandango
Dance on moonbeams
Slide on rainbows
In furs or blue jeans
You know what I mean
Do the Strand
Had your fill of Quadrilles
The Madison and cheap thrills
Bored with the Beguine
The samba isn't your scene
They're playing our tune
By the pale moon
We're incognito
Down the Lido
And we like the Strand
Arabs at oasis
Eskimos and Chinese
If you feel blue
Look through Who's Who
See La Goulue
And Nijinsky
Do the Strandsky
Weary of the Waltz
And mashed potato schmaltz
Rhododendron
Is a nice flower
Evergreen
It lasts forever
But it can't beat Strand power
The Sphynx and Mona Lisa
Lolita and Guernica
Did the Strand
The Bryan Ferry Orchestra's song Do The Strand is a celebration of a new sensation, a fabulous creation that is a danceable solution to teenage revolution. The lyrics call upon the listeners to embrace a new way of feeling love and to express it by doing the Strand. The Strand is a dance that can be done on tables, at Quaglino's place or Mabel's. It can be slow and gentle, sentimental, or in any style preferred, whether in blue jeans or furs. The song encourages the listeners to dance on moonbeams and slide on rainbows, making it a danceable solution to any problem.
The song mentions Louis Seize, who prefers laissez-faire at Le Strand. The lyrics poke fun at the outdated dances of the past like the Quadrille, Madison, and Beguine. The song takes listeners on a journey down the Lido, where they encounter Arabs, Eskimos and Chinese, all of whom are doing the Strand. The song urges listeners to keep doing the Strandsky, the Strand's more exotic cousin, to beat the schmaltzy mashed potato and Waltz. The Strand is powerful, and even though it cannot beat the immortality of the Rhododendron, the Sphynx, Mona Lisa, Lolita, and Guernica, they all did the Strand.

Love this album, and I'm not even a jazz buff! It's made all the more enjoyable by the fact there is no palpable irony or tongues planted in cheeks. It's just a straight-forward re-imagining of classic Roxy/Ferry tunes as jazzy, 1920s-flavored romps. It's crazy, but it works: Ferry's cool sensibility slices across all eras, and his love of the genre makes this both a reverential tribute, and a surprising amount of fun!! Highly recommended.
