Waiting for the Sun
The Busters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

everybody' tired and wasted
unsatisfied and pale like death
no one looks like all the models
of h&m the mood is bad

sometimes you can hear some laughter
but when you look a bit too close
you see all these happy people
have a white line underneath their nose

all this wouldn't be so bad
if it wasn't raining all the time
six weeks a month of pms
the undertaker's doin' fine

everybody's waiting for the sun
everybody's waiting for the sun
rain and taxes and no prozac
tell me, where's the fun

space is tight under the bridges
booze is cheap and soon you'll find
nothing bad to see in your life
but you're not happy, you're just blind

and the very happy few
who still got a job to do
work a hundred hours a week
until they get fired, too

depression is that one disease
we all have, and aching knees
but thanks to tv we can handle
our suicidal tendencies

everybody's waiting for the sun
everybody's waiting for the sun
rain and taxes and no prozac
tell me, where's the fun

everybody's waiting for the sun
everybody's waiting for the sun
rain and taxes and no prozac
tell me, where's the fun

when your car is old and dirty
the police think that you smoke pot
when it's nice and clean just hide it
to make sure you won't get robbed

everybody's waiting for the sun
everybody's waiting for the sun
rain and taxes and no prozac
tell me, where's the fun

everybody's waiting for the sun
everybody's waiting for the sun
all the millionaires are cryin'
money is on the run

everybody's waiting for the sun

Overall Meaning

The Busters's song Waiting for the Sun talks about a society that is constantly under pressure and suffering. The opening lines suggest that everyone is tired and dissatisfied, with a pale complexion like death. People do not look like the models advertised by H&M, and the mood is bad. The song describes how even though people laugh, there is always something amiss. Upon closer inspection, there is a white line underneath their nose that suggests people are using drugs to escape their problems. The weather is continuously bad, with rain dominating the forecast, and PMS plaguing women throughout the month. The undertaker seems to be thriving because of the high suicide rate.

The second stanza of the song talks about the conditions under the bridges, where people live in cramped spaces with cheap booze. Life in this harsh environment is bleak, and people can't find anything enjoyable about their lives. Even people with jobs are working over 100 hours a week, and the high level of depression becomes the new normal. The song suggests that we use television to numb our suicidal tendencies. The final stanza talks about how everyone waits for the sun to shine, but there seems to be no end to the rain, and the millionaires who have all the money in the world are also crying, showing that even money can't solve all their problems.

Overall, the song is a commentary on a society that is suffering from a range of problems, including unemployment, substance abuse, depression, and bad weather. The song suggests that, even though people might mask their problems with drugs or TV, they can never escape their concerns. The various stanzas of the song highlight the different groups—both poor and wealthy—who are suffering and seeking the same thing- sunshine.
