Emily provides vocals and occasional piano, while Al is a master fiddler and mandolinist. They have released four CDs together, most recently The Heart Wants What It Wants (2004).

The Cantrells have appeared on radio's Mountain Stage and E-Town. The Chicago Tribune reported that their "performance was a diverse, consistently entertaining program that blended outstanding musicianship and engaging original material." They also appear performing old-time fiddle tunes in the Robert Redford movie A River Runs Through It.
