I wouldn't go to Wal-Mart to see if I have skin cancer. The people there may be very smart, but they are not trained in identifying cancer. Not everyone is trained to identify a mental illness. I had depression in junior high, and my parents never knew, my friends didn't know, because I was ashamed and I hid it. If my mother was psychologist I don't think I would have been able to hide it.
The good news is most colleges require psychology, some now consider it a "basic." So maybe more people will be more aware of the signs. It's surreal that people do what they do, almost unspeakable even, but to think your own son/daughter would do that...

Try to remember that A he is a kid and B these trials are at least a year later often several years and appeals are many many years later. So no they are not going to show emotion like they would when they freshly experience something. They spend every single day for years knowing they are where they are because of what they did. At a certain point they are going to become a bit numb to the experience and retelling of the story.
Have you experienced a death of someone you loved? In the beginning just thinking of them is physically painful and you become emotional but after a few years you can tell stories about them and laugh you live your life sometimes for months without thinking of them... it's human nature not a mark of being a horrible person.

You have no idea what he does or doesn't care about particularly when he was a late teenager when he committed this crime. He would have spent a great deal of time in jail before ever getting to trial for the fist time reminded every second of every day what he did. He would have been questioned endlessly about it, gone over the legal case, witness statements, and evidence repeatedly. That's just the first trial by appeals we are talking many many years later with going over all these things repeatedly. I'm not giving him justification for his crime or saying it's ok and he deserves no punishment. I'm saying that the argument that people don't have epic break downs in court every time they appear or speak doesn't tell us they don't care it tells us NOTHING. Because guilty or innocent people are not built to maintain extreme emotional states for the long term. People are built to tamper those emotions so they can survive and function. Also ALL defense lawyers will instruct them not to react in any extreme way to anything said or if they speak to do so with control. If he cried and broke down about it you know what people would say they'd say it was fake or that he was crying for himself and not the victim or their family. It's a no win situation for people in these situations. Nothing they do or say will be taken as sincere regardless of if or is or isn't. He should absolutely without question face a consequence for his horrific behavior. The reality however is (as we have seen in endless other countries justice systems and endless research) that a young person who does something like this is not beyond being a law abiding productive member of society if given a appropriate sentence that, yes is a punishment, but also has rehabilitation opportunities. Moral of the story you don't know shit about if he is sorry for what he did or not. He might not be he might be beyond redemption and if he spends 30years in prison with no education or counseling he probably will be. We will do our society no favors and piss away millions on him alone yet a similar crime in the UK would likely result in 10-15 years in prison with treatment and the last few years in transitional living getting them a job, pay "rent" at the supervised living place they would be in etc. They have far less re-offender rates then we do and spend less money on these inmates overall by exponential factors. So it is clear it can be done differently with a cheaper, better, a safer outcome for society. That is supposed to be the point of a justice system, not revenge and cheap labor for corporations.

I remember as a child my mother telling me and my siblings, just in conversation when we watched a crime documentary on tv, she said ‘remember my words, if any of you were to commit a crime, I will not be there to protect you, commit a crime your in your own to deal with the consequences’ we would never have committed a crime as we had good parents who raised us to know better…..however I’ve watched crime documentaries with my own daughter as she too is intrigued as to what would possess someone to commit a crime, she’s also interested in forensics, when I see parents trying to get their children off getting sentenced for a crime I remember my late mum’s words, she was right, if so wi e is grown enough to commit a crime they’re grown up enough to face whatever consequences that will follow, a good person will not commit a crime, the only act of violence I would question is an act of self defence, if someone is in danger and they fight back out of survival then yea that person will need support and help if proven that self defence was in fact the case
