Pulling Teeth
The Cardboard Crowns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's one thousand things they'll teach you
Just before they turn to leech you of your soul
And all your time
And they'll be "so pleased to meet you"
And to know if they can treat you to a meal,
They'll pour the wine.

Then they'll tell you that you want it,
And they'll show you how to flaunt it
At the same time as you climb
When you're so wowed by all the glamour
You can't even feel the hammer
As it shatters through your spine.

But I didn't get the words they said
And I never learned to write between the lines
Before you read.

And they tell you you're alone.

Now you're drowning in politeness
But you start the sense the tightness
of the rope you walk or hang.
They've got eight fingers in your pies
And the last two in your eyes
To hide the glistening of their fangs.

But we could hear the words not said,
Slip between their grinning teeth
To make their way inside your head

Then they tell you you're so close.

Yes, there's ten thousand things they'll teach you
To facilitate the breach into your head
Your heart, your mind.
And if you dare not meet projections
You find - despite your best objections -
They will cast you from their side.

But I didn't get the words they said
And I never learned to write between the lines
Before you read.

And they tell you you're alone.

Overall Meaning

The Cardboard Crowns' song "Pulling Teeth" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of succumbing to societal pressures and losing oneself in the process. The lyrics speak to the idea that people will try to take advantage of you, drain your energy, and manipulate you until they can cast you aside. The song conveys the idea that society teaches us to value things like success, glamour, and prestige, but at what cost? The lines "And all your time / And they'll be 'so pleased to meet you' / And to know if they can treat you to a meal / They'll pour the wine" highlight the insidious nature of these societal pressures - on the surface, it all seems harmless and even pleasant, but in reality, it's all just a means to an end.

The pre-chorus ("But I didn't get the words they said / And I never learned to write between the lines / Before you read") speaks to the idea that it's easy to get lost in the noise of external pressures and forget to listen to one's own inner voice. The chorus ("And they tell you you're alone") emphasizes the loneliness that often accompanies these experiences, as those who are wrapped up in the pursuit of success and validation are often isolated from true human connection.

Overall, "Pulling Teeth" serves as a reminder that we must be mindful of our own values and priorities in order to avoid getting lost in the noise of societal pressures.

These guys are amazing, so much talent in one band, and all consummate entertainers. This video is cool but they are one incredible live band. If they dont become bigger than Imagine Dragons and headline Glastonbury in 2016 I shall be surprised !
