The Carpet Crawlers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There is lamb's wool under my naked feet.
The wool is soft and warm
Gives off some kind of heat
A salamander scurries into flame to be destroyed
Imaginary creatures are trapped in birth on celluloid
The fleas cling to the golden fleece
Hoping they'll find peace
Each thought and gesture are caught in celluloid
There's no hiding in memory
There's no room to avoid

The crawlers cover the floor
In the red ocher corridor
For my second sight of people
They've more life blood than before
They're moving in time to a heavy wooden door
Where the needle's eye is winking
Closing on the poor
The carpet crawlers heed their callers
We've gotta get in to get out
We've gotta get in to get out
We've gotta get in to get out

There's only one direction
In the faces that I see
It's upward to the ceiling
Where the chamber's said to be
Like the forest fight for sunlight
That takes root in every tree.
They are pulled up by the magnet
Believing they're free
The carpet crawlers heed their callers
We've gotta get in to get out
We've gotta get in to get out
We've gotta get in to get out

Mild-mannered supermen
Are held in kryptonite,
And the wise and foolish virgins
Giggle with their bodies glowing bright
Through the door a harvest feast
Is lit by candlelight
It's the bottom of a staircase
That spirals out of sight
The carpet crawlers heed their callers
We've gotta get in to get out
We've gotta get in to get out
We've gotta get in to get out

The porcelain mannequin
With shattered skin fears attack
And the eager pack lift up their pitchers
They carry all they lack
The liquid has congealed
Which has seeped out through the crack
And the tickler takes his stickleback
The carpet crawlers heed their callers
We've gotta get in to get out
We've gotta get in to get out
We've gotta get in to get out

We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Genesis's song "The Carpet Crawlers" relates to a recurring theme present in many of their songs, which is the search for transcendence and salvation. The song tells the story of a character who finds himself in a strange place and who witnesses different hallucinations and surreal imagery. He sees imaginary creatures trapped in celluloid and a salamander that rushes into the flame to be destroyed. He walks on lamb's wool that gives off heat and feels the fleas clinging to the golden fleece in the hallway. Eventually, he finds himself among a group of people moving to the rhythm of a heavy wooden door, where the needle's eye is closing on the poor.

The character experiences a sense of spiritual mysticism and feels like he is being pulled upward, towards the ceiling, where the chamber is said to be. Like a forest that fights for sunlight and takes root in every tree, the people are being pulled up by a magnet, believing that they are free. As the character moves forward, he witnesses the porcelain mannequin with the shattered skin who fears the attack and the eager pack who carry all they lack.

Overall, the lyrics of the song "The Carpet Crawlers" showcase Genesis's ability to create a vivid and surreal world, presenting the listener with a range of images that encourage abstract interpretations.

@cosmicbilly

I was 19 when i heard this album for the first time.
On 10 hits of crystal LSD, some Salvia tea and a handful of cubensis.

My bestfriend had this record on Vinyl at the time and he randomly put it on.

I didn't know what i was listening to so i layed down on my back on the floor and closed my eyes.
We listened to the entire album all the way through.

Im not kidding you when i say my life was changed by the end of it.
What a journey that was!

I am almost 30 now and still get flashbacks.
This album will always be held very close to my heart.❤
