The Church in the Wildwood
The Carter Family Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a church in the valley by the wildwood
No lovelier place in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

Oh, come, come, come, come,
Come to the church in the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

How sweet on a clear Sabbath morning
To listen to the clear ringing bell
Its tones so sweetly are calling
Oh, come to the church in the dale

Oh, come, come, come, come,
Come to the church in the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

There, close by the side of the loved one
'Neath the tree where the wild flowers bloom
She sleeps, sweet love sleeps, 'neath the willow
Disturb not her rest in the tomb

Oh, come, come, come, come,
Come to the church in the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

Oh, come, come, come, come,
Come to the church in the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the dale

No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the dale

Overall Meaning

The Church in the Wildwood is a heartfelt tribute to a place that holds an important place in the singer's heart. This song is about a church nestled in a valley surrounded by a wildwood. The singer speaks of how there is no other place that is as dear to their childhood as the little brown church in the dale. The song has three stanzas, each with a different theme.

The first stanza talks about the beauty of the church and the wildwood around it. The singer describes the church as the loveliest place in the dale and reminisces about their childhood, highlighting the church as a prominent feature of their memories.

In the second stanza, the singer speaks about the church's bell, that rings sweetly on a clear Sabbath morning. The bell's sound is so soothing that it invites people to come and join in worship. The singer urges the listeners to come to the church and witness its beauty for themselves.

The final stanza is a poignant one, where the singer speaks of a loved one who is buried close to the little brown church in the dale. The loved one sleeps peacefully under a willow tree, and the singer urges the listeners to respect the sanctity of the place and not disturb their rest.

Uno de mis temas favoritos de Country Gospel. La mejor versión junto con las de The Forester Sisters y The Statler Brothers.
The Carter Family fue de los primeros grupos en cantar en versión folk los principales temas de Country Gospel.

The Carter Family was one of the pioneers gospel music. The way they collected songs was brilliant. Thy traveled all over mountains and collected songs some of the songs were in those locations for years. Amazing.
