Yanni Depp
The Chariot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blank stare.
Smile, with teeth exposed.
Novacaine.
All we are, are crocodiles.
Black out.
Blessed we come and blessed we go.
But this world is full of white teeth and black lungs.
The skin bares no scars, but it is gray.
Your smile is so great, but your face is blank.
Think not.
Don't think.
Suffice.

The revolutionary fade...
"I get bored" your drowning in ankle deep water.

Overall Meaning

The Chariot's song Yanni Depp takes a dark turn with lyrics that are heavier than the music. The opening lines "Blank stare, smile with teeth exposed, Novacaine, All we are, are crocodiles" create an image of humans who have lost their soul and are behaving like emotionless animals. This is then further emphasized by the lines "Black out, blessed we come and blessed we go, but this world is full of white teeth and black lungs." These lines are suggestive of the fact that we might live our entire lives without really achieving anything, without a sense purpose or even awareness. The references to black lungs and teeth suggest the price we pay for living in an industrialized society.

The line "The skin bares no scars, but it is gray" seems to imply that everything is rote and lifeless, that we go through the motions without really experiencing anything. The final lines of the song, "I get bored" your drowning in ankle deep water" could be interpreted as the lead singer's cry of desperation. This could indicate that he is tired of pretending, tired of faking it, and he's finally sinking below the surface into the apathetic depths of despair.
