Bad Days
The Charlatans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I get these bad days baby
I just don't know
I'm in my own world honey
I don't know
And You can play me
In a world of fools
'Cause You know that You're no friend of mine
I get these bad dreams lately
I just don't know
There's a death cloud hanging
Over You
It's been too long since I
Told You
You're no friend of mine

I get these bad days baby
I just don't know
I'm in my own world honey
I don't know
And You can play me
In a world of fools
'Cause You know that You're no friend of mine

I get these bad dreams lately
I just don't know
There's a death cloud hanging
Over You
It's been too long since I
Told You
You're no friend of mine

Playing dead under the covers, I don't feel like ever waking up
Playing dead under the covers, I don't feel like ever making up

Oh We could never be desperate
I feel
So much younger than yesterday

I get these bad days baby
I just don't know
I'm in my own world honey
I don't know
And You can play me
In a world of fools
'Cause You know that You're no friend of mine

I get these bad dreams lately
I just don't know
You have a death cloud hanging
Over You
It's been a long time since I
Told You
You're no friend of mine

Oh
We Could be end love

Oh
Younger than yesterday

Overall Meaning

The song “Bad Days” by The Charlatans talks about a narrator who is experiencing bad days and bad dreams, feeling isolated in his own world. The singer realizes that the people around him, especially the ones who he considers his friends, are not loyal and trustworthy. The line “’Cause you know that you’re no friend of mine” highlights that the singer has finally come to a conclusion that their friendship is only for the show, and they don’t have a genuine connection. In the second stanza, the singer hints at the death cloud that is hanging over one of his friends, which could signify that he is going through a tough time or a difficult period in his life.

The chorus of the song repeats the same lyrics twice, creating impetus and intensity. The bridge part of the song suggests that despite things not going well, there is still hope for the future. The lines “Oh, we could never be desperate,” suggest that there is always a way out of misery and troubles. The final line “Younger than yesterday” again highlights his spirit and optimism for a brighter future.

The Stone Roses brought out just two studio albums, one great, the other not so great. The Charlatans have brought out THIRTEEN (count 'em!) studio albums (more than the Roses and Happy Mondays have put out in total). Many of which are brilliant and, in fact, the more recent ones rank among some of the best they have ever done. The band simply keep delivering! And still they don't get the kudos or recognition and hyperbole that their peers always get. Such is life and the way things are....

It's easy to forget the charlatans and push them into the madcester camp im at least to someone in their thirties. This is more than a welcome return, they have progressed and lets hope in another 20 or more years they are remembered. can't stop playing this, good one fellas.. not only have you progressed you have managed to keep the elements that made you great.
