1) The Choir were a rock band in the mid-1960s from Cleveland Ohio, best known for the oft-covered song "It's Cold Outside". With the addition of singer Eric Carmen, they became The Raspberries in 1970. The band consisted of Dann Klawon on rhythm guitar, Dave Smalley on vocals & rhythm guitar, Wally Bryson on vocals, lead guitar, & bass, and Jim Bonfanti on vocals & drums.
2) The Choir (originally The Youth Choir) is an atmospheric alternative Christian rock band, led by Derri Daugherty on guitar and vocals, Steve Hindalong on drums -- who also writes most of the band's lyrics -- and Dan Michaels on lyricon, electric flute and saxophone. Originally formed in Southern California in the early 1980s, the band members moved to the Nashville, Tennessee area in the 1990s. Past members include guitarist Marc Byrd and bass guitarists Michael Sauerbrey, Robin Spurs, Bill Batstone, and the late Tim Chandler.
Each band member also has a depth of musical history outside of The Choir. Hindalong produced four successful City On A Hill albums, writing the well-known song "God of Wonders" with Marc Byrd. Daugherty has been a member of the Christian-alterna-pop-supergroup The Lost Dogs since it started in 1991, and Hindalong joined the group in 2006. Chandler was the bass player for years for Daniel Amos and that band's alter egos The Swirling Eddies, and passed away in 2018. Byrd was a member of Common Children, recorded with his wife Christine Glass as Glassbyrd, and is currently half of the post-rock duo Hammock. Michaels has been a Senior Vice President of Fair Trade Services (formerly INO Records) since 2000.
Listen to Her Eyes
The Choir Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Yours is written in the sky
Lucky stars vanish with the night
See what shines by morning light
(There's your diamond)
If your love is more than words
Listen to her eyes
Listen to her eyes
Read her tears like pages
Hold her when she cries
If your love is more than words
Listen to her, listen to her eyes
Promises tumble in the breeze
Never mind apologies
When she shakes words are not enough
Wrap her spirit in your love
If your love is more than words
Listen to her eyes
If your love is more than words
Listen to her eyes
Read her tears like pages
Hold her when she cries
If your love is more than words
Listen to her, listen to her eyes
The Choir's song "Listen to Her Eyes" explores the importance of truly listening and understanding one's partner in a romantic relationship. The lyrics suggest that words and promises alone are not sufficient for maintaining a strong bond, and that one must pay attention to non-verbal communication, such as tears and body language, to truly connect with their partner.
The opening lyrics encourage the listener to guard their bond with their partner, despite the uncertainty of fate. The idea that the bond is "written in the sky" suggests a sense of destiny or inevitability, but the following line suggests that luck is not enough to keep a relationship strong. The refrain, "If your love is more than words / Listen to her eyes," emphasizes the importance of paying attention to non-verbal communication in order to truly understand one's partner.
The second verse suggests that promises and apologies are not as important as actions and emotional support. The line "When she shakes words are not enough" suggests that verbal reassurances are not adequate when one's partner is upset or emotional. Instead, the listener is encouraged to "wrap her spirit in your love" and provide genuine emotional support. Overall, the song encourages listeners to pay attention to their partner's emotional needs and to prioritize genuine emotional connection over superficial promises or expressions of love.
