I don't know just how you feel but I can't stay distant
Desperation is for hard times, can't you see we're wasting time
I can see you in your old jeans, it's haunting me
I oh I stepped across that line
You know I didn't say forever and I didn't even mind
I oh I should've said goodbye
But one things true, you know girl, I can't see nothing but you
The situation calls for sympathy, I make mistakes cause I am me
Don't you listen to your friends right now they're just hating something
We've been together for so long, when it's right you know it can't be wrong
This ain't no hard crime, my mind is spinning
I oh I stepped across that line
You know I didn't say forever and I didn't even mind
I oh I should've said goodbye
Now I'm holding on to your love though it isn't even mine
But one things true, you know girl, I can't see nothing but you
Here in isolation, where the better thoughts come through
You were all I needed, you were every dream come true
Our situation, no it's not lost
Just take my hand, and never stop
I oh I stepped across that line
You know I didn't say forever and I didn't even mind
I oh I should've said goodbye
Now I'm holding on to your love though it isn't even mine
But one things true, you know girl, I can't see nothing but you
You know I can't see nothing
And I didn't know why
You know girl, I should have said goodbye
Now I'm losing my mind
You know, I can't see nothing but you
Oh I can't see nothing
You know girl, I can't see nothing but you
The lyrics of The Clarks's song "Nothing but You" delve into the complexities of a tumultuous relationship and the conflicting emotions that the singer is experiencing. The first verse reflects on a disconnected phone conversation that started well but ended on a cold note, hinting at unresolved feelings and a sense of distance between the two individuals involved. The mention of desperation and time wasted suggests a sense of urgency and longing for connection that is not being fulfilled.
As the song progresses, the singer acknowledges crossing a line in the relationship and not committing to a future together. Despite this, they find themselves unable to let go of the other person's love, even though it may not be reciprocated. The repeated refrain of "I can't see nothing but you" emphasizes the consuming nature of their feelings and the inability to focus on anything else but the person they are deeply entwined with.
The second verse addresses external influences, such as friends' opinions and societal expectations, that may be casting doubt on the relationship. The singer defends their bond, highlighting the longevity and familiarity they share with their partner. The internal struggle portrayed in the lyrics showcases the singer's inner turmoil as they grapple with conflicting emotions and a deep longing for connection.
The final verse brings a sense of reflection and acceptance as the singer finds solace in the memories and dreams they shared with their partner. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, there is a plea for unity and perseverance in the face of adversity. The song concludes with a poignant admission of being unable to see beyond the person they love, even amidst turmoil and heartache. Overall, "Nothing but You" captures the bittersweet complexity of relationships and the enduring power of love, even in the face of obstacles and uncertainty.
