The band formed in 2006 as a joke, played a house show and were asked to open for The Hiss on the strength of their performance. The name was chosen for its vulgarity - an irreverent take on abortions - though all band members are pro-choice.
Their playfulness continues into their songs, with titles such as 'Don't Touch My Shit, Nestle In My Boobies and "Shut the Fuck Up." They released a 7 inch on Atlanta's Die Slaughterhaus Records and their first full length self titled on Rob's House Records.
After taking time to tour and putting out another 7 inch on Seattle based Suicide Squeeze Records, the Coathangers released their second full length SCRAMBLE in April 2009.

The Coathangers’ song “Go Away” is about wanting someone who is pursuing a romantic relationship with you, to stop trying. The lyrics suggest that the singer has had enough of the other person’s advances and wants some space. In the first verse, the singer reminds the other person that they won’t be interrogated about where they’ve been or why they are speaking so fast. The second verse explains that the other person is trying to prove something to the singer and hoping that they will fall for him. The chorus repeatedly tells the other person to go away and leave the singer alone because they are not interested in a relationship. The bridge tells the other person to close their eyes and dream about the singer because they will never be anything more than a dream.
This song is a prime example of punk rock's straightforwardness in expressing frustrated feelings. Despite its high energy and catchy sound, the song ultimately carries a message of independence and self-assuredness - the singer knows she doesn't need anyone, and most certainly doesn't need someone who's trying too hard, hence the repeated "go away" chorus. The lyrics are uncomplicated, but they manage to convey a significant message.
