His voice, as the sound of the dulcimer sweet
Is heard through the shadows of death
The cedars of Lebanon bow at His feet
The air is perfumed with His breath
His lips as the fountain of righteousness flow
That waters the garden of grace
From which their salvation the Gentiles shall know
And bask in the smile of His face

Love sits in his eyelids and scatters delight
Through all the bright regions on high
Their faces the cherubim veil in his sight
And tremble with fullness of joy
He looks and ten thousands of angels rejoice
And myriads wait for His word
He speaks and eternity filled with His voice
Re-echoes the praise of the Lord

He looks and ten thousands of angels rejoice
And myriads wait for His word
He speaks and eternity filled with His voice
Re-echoes the praise of the Lord

Re-echoes the praise of the Lord

Someone asked for the lyrics, here they are, see below... I was at conference and was so touched by the spirit during this song.... absolutely beautiful.

His voice, as the sound of the dulcimer sweet,
is heard through the shadows of death;
The cedars of Lebanon bow at His feet,
the air is perfumed with His breath.
His lips as the fountain of righteousness flow,
that waters the garden of grace,
From which their salvation the Gentiles shall know,
and bask in the smile of His face.

(instrumental interlude)
Love sits in his eyelids and scatters delight,
through all the bright regions on high.
Their faces the cherubim veil in his sight,
and tremble with fullness of joy.
He looks and ten thousands of angels rejoice,
and myriads wait for His word.
He speaks and eternity filled with His voice
Re-echoes the praise of the Lord.

(instrumental interlude)
He looks and ten thousands of angels rejoice,
and myriads wait for His word.
He speaks and eternity filled with His voice
Re-echoes the praise of the Lord.

I love the verses that were added to this hymn, but here is the original hymn as written by Joseph Swain in 1791, with all verses:

His voice as the sound of the dulcimer sweet,
Is heard through the shadows of death;
The cedars of Lebanon bow at his feet,
The air is perfumed with his breath.
His lips as the fountain of righteousness flow,
That waters the garden of grace;
From which their salvation the Gentiles shall know,
And bask in the smiles of his face.

O! thou in whose presence my soul takes delight,
On whom, in affliction, I call;
My comfort by day, and my song in the night,
My hope, my salvation, my all—
Where dost thou at noontide resort with thy sheep,
To feed on the pastures of love?
Say why in the valley of death should I weep,
Or alone in the wilderness rove?

O! why should I wander an alien from thee,
And cry in the desert for bread?
Thy foes will rejoice when my sorrows they see,
And smile at the tears I have shed.
Ye daughters of Zion, declare, have you seen
The Star that on Israel shone?
Say if in your tents my beloved has been,
And where, with his flock, he is gone?

"What is thy Beloved, thou dignified fair?
What excellent beauties has he?
His charms and perfections be pleased to declare,
That we may embrace him with thee."
This is my Beloved, his form is divine;
His vestments shed odor around;
The locks on his head are as grapes on the vine,
When autumn with plenty is crowned.

The roses of Sharon, the lilies that grow
In the vales, on the banks of the streams,
On his cheeks in the beauty of excellence blow,
And his eyes are as quivers of beams.
His voice as the sound of the dulcimer, sweet,
Is heard through the shadows of death;
The cedars of Lebanon bow at his feet,
The air is perfumed with his breath.

He needs only to look, and ten thousands of Angels rejoice! Their faces the cherubim veil in his sight and tremble with fullness of joy! This is exactly what I picture it like being in the presence of the Father.

I can still remember how powerfully influenced by the spirit I felt when I heard this song over two years ago.

I remember a few years ago when I was at my grandparents' house. (Note, I'm a Catholic but I don't go to church. I do believe in God though). I was just minding my own business watching Lets Plays on YouTube when this song played on the TV. I paused my video and took off my headphones so I could listen to it. I even asked my grandfather to go back to the beginning of the song so I could write down the name of it. Never have I been so moved by a hymn before. Maybe video game tracks or songs in movies, but never a hymn. But this brought me such an intense feeling of melancholy. The key that it's in brings a tranquil feeling of sorrow that put me at peace emotionally. Even years later I still come back and listen to it once more just to experience emotional peace once again.

Scootermom

So relatable! I heard it for the first time, I believe, earlier this morning. I can't stop listening to it. I love how you wrote "a tranquil feeling of sorrow." That's very eloquent and describes how I feel as well. I love the sound of music written in minor keys (not super common). Minor keys tend to make music sound more ethereal, which is very fitting for this piece. I hope you will find more peace in your life in God and His son. 🙂
