We Three Kings
The Cool Yule All-Stars Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Bearing gifts we’ve traveled so far
Field and fountain
Moor and mountain
Following yonder Star
O Star of Wonder, Star of Might
Star with Royal Beauty bright
Westward leading
Guide us to that perfect Light
Born a King on Bethlehem plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever
Ceasing never
Over us all to reign
Frankincense to offer have I
Peace and love, eternal, divine
Prayer and praising
All men raising
Worship Him God most High
Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing
Bleeding, dying
Then temporary tomb
O Star of Wonder, Star of Might
Star with Royal Beauty bright
Westward leading
Still proceeding
Guide us to that perfect Light
Glorious now behold Him arise
King, and God, and Sacrifice
Hallelujah: Hallelujah
Sound mutual replies
O Star of Wonder, Star of Might
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading
Still proceeding
Guide us to that perfect Light
Guide us to that perfect Light
In "We Three Kings," the lyrics depict the journey of the three wise men, also known as the three kings from the East, who are traveling to see the newborn Jesus. They are bearing gifts and following a star, which they believe will lead them to the Messiah. The lyrics allude to various landscapes they traverse along their way, including fields, fountains, moors, and mountains.
The first verse emphasizes their purpose: they are on a mission to find and worship the new King. The reference to the "Star of Wonder" suggests that this star is not an ordinary star, but something divine and extraordinary. It guides them as they travel westward, signifying their determination and faith in finding the "perfect Light."
The second verse focuses on each king's gift. The first king brings gold to crown Jesus, symbolizing his kingship and royalty. The line "ceasing never, over us all to reign" implies that Jesus's reign will be eternal. The second king brings frankincense, which was often used in religious ceremonies and symbolizes prayer, worship, and the divine nature of Jesus. The third king brings myrrh, a substance used for embalming, signifying Jesus's eventual death and burial. This gift foreshadows the upcoming sorrows and death that Jesus will face.
The third verse brings together the themes of the star and Jesus's divine nature. It reinforces that the star is not just any celestial body but a symbol of wonder and power. Jesus is portrayed as both a king and a sacrifice, a divine figure who will bring salvation. The repetition of "Hallelujah" implies a joyful chorus of praise reverberating among all who witness His birth.
The final verse repeats the second verse and concludes the song, reiterating the journey toward the "perfect Light." Overall, the lyrics of "We Three Kings" tell the story of the three wise men's quest to find and worship Jesus, while highlighting the majesty, sacrifice, and divine nature of the newborn King.

Wonderful! This piece may make holiday 2020 bearable. The baritone sax solo was great. It was fun to see the other guys enjoying it. The player looked a bit like Prince Harry.
