They released three albums to considerable acclaim: Made In Cape Breton (2002), On Fire (2004), and Forerunner (2006). In 2006, they toured extensively with the well-known Irish band The Chieftains. However, the founding members of the band split up in 2006, either because of artistic differences, or health problems, according to different reports.
The band began to appear without the Mackenzie siblings, and after experimenting with various fill-ins, settled upon fiddler Claire Pettit and fellow Cape Bretoner Bruce Timmons on guitar. They are currently working on a new studio album for release in Summer 2008.

The Cottars, une superbe réalisation familiale venue du bout du monde, des identités personnelles positives, beaucoup de talent. Lors de l' enregistrement de cet album "Made in cap Breton" la petite chanteuse ne devait pas avoir plus de onze, douze ans, avec un naturel exceptionnellement rare, qui fait toute la qualité du morceau " Sùilean Dubh". La voix des garçons était de même simplement merveilleuse. On retrouve parfois cette qualité, cette innocence à l' âge adulte, ce n' est cependant pas ce qui parait dans le monde musical effectif, très généralement.....C' est un privilège que l' enfance ait encore, de nos jours, le droit à l' innocence. Elle se transforme parfois en "une certaine honnêteté des adultes humbles," d' où l' authenticité, cette perle rare; absolument rare.
A mon souvenir, sur le dos du disque figurait une photo du père agenouillé, entourant de ses bras deux enfants ; ceci explique cela, il n' y a jamais eu d' autre voie, il faut un père et une mère vivant avec bonté et équilibre.....Une famille, une foi, un art !
Il suffit de comparer honnêtement des versions autres, des chants proposés, et cela vaut pour tout en musique, pour s' apercevoir de l' immensité qui sépare deux interprétations. On compare sans crainte les icônes du passé, jouées au piano , par exemple, et l' on s' aperçoit sans détour, qu' un "Samson François" joue avec une humanité profonde.
Ainsi , s' il faut rendre à César ce qui est à César, on peut comprendre que ce qui vient du ciel ou de l' âme doit être nommé comme tel. Néanmoins comme tout, la Grâce n' est pas éternelle, celle de l' enfance si elle n' est pas développée vers les qualités intérieures, s' envole comme neige au vent.
Mais ce qui est fait, est toujours fait, et dans notre cas, l' apport des Cottars dans leur ensemble est constitutif du patrimoine musical et humain, d' exception. Il me semble que par moment, les adultes accèdent quelques fois à cette réalité, cette justesse, souvenons nous par exemple du groupe Pentangle, avec light flight particulièrement, ( BBC spécial 1970 ) une capacité avec quelques limites et malgré tout une parfaite pureté d' intention et de fait, un résultat fluide et grand : un Chef d' oeuvre.....
J' ai souvent utilisé "Sùilean Dubh" comme berceuse, en famille donc,... ce pour quoi la musique est d' abord nécessaire et indispensable.
