Combining the melodic jangle of post-The Smiths indie pop with the lilting, trance-inducing sonic textures of late-80s dream pop and adding a slight Celtic tint, The Cranberries became one of the more successful groups to emerge from the indie scene of the early 90s. Led by vocalist Dolores O'Riordan, whose keening, powerful voice was the most distinctive element of the group's sound, the group initially made little impact in the United Kingdom.
It wasn't until the lush ballad "Linger" became an American hit in 1993 that the band also achieved mass success in the U.K. Following the success of "Linger", The Cranberries quickly became international stars, as both their 1993 debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, and its 1994 follow-up, No Need to Argue, sold millions of copies and produced a string of hit singles like "Dreams", "Zombie" and "Ode to My Family".
By the time of their third album, 1996's To the Faithful Departed, the group had added distorted guitars to its sonic palette and attempted to make more socially significant music, which resulted in a downturn in the band's commercial fortunes.
During the next few years, the band cancelled a large tour and rumours of a breakup were widespread. In 1999, they released Bury the Hatchet to mixed reviews. In 2001, the band issued Wake Up and Smell the Coffee to rave reviews. The album debuted at number 46 in the US charts.
In 2002, The Cranberries released the compilation Stars: The Best of 1992-2002, which was supported by the single "Stars".
In 2003, The Cranberries announced they were taking some time to pursue individual careers. They decided to put the next album on hold. After more than a dozen years of relentless touring and promotion, which had seen them clocking up album sales in excess of 43 million and playing to hundreds of thousands of fans around the globe, the band decided it was time for a break.
In 2007, Dolores O'Riordan released her debut solo album titled Are You Listening?. Two years later she released her second solo album, No Baggage.
On 25 August 2009, Dolores O'Riordan announced that The Cranberries will be reuniting for a North American tour to begin in mid-November 2009, to be followed by dates in Europe in early 2010. O'Riordan indicated that the band will be playing songs from her solo albums and a lot of The Cranberries classic hits as well as some new music written by the group together.
The Cranberries recorded Roses at the Metalworks Studios in Toronto (Canada) from 18 April to 15 May 2011 with producer Stephen Street, who previously collaborated with the band on first, second and fifth albums. The Cranberries worked on 15 tracks during the Roses session, although not all will be included on the album. The album is scheduled for release on 14 February, 2012.
On 26 May 2016, the Cranberries announced that they would start their next tour in Europe. The first show was held on June 3.
A new "unplugged" Cranberries album titled Something Else, featuring the band's hits along with three new songs, was released on 28 April 2017 through BMG. The album received mostly positive reviews.
On 15 January 2018, lead singer Dolores O'Riordan was found dead of drowning in a London hotel room. The Cranberries confirmed in September 2018 that they would not continue as a band, releasing their final album In the End in April 2019 and disbanding afterward.Noel Hogan stated: "the Cranberries was the four of us. We don’t want to do this without Dolores. So we’re going to leave it after this."
The Cranberries' final album In the End has been nominated for Best Rock Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. The awards take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 26, 2020.

Ode To My Family
The Cranberries Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't turn away from me
'Cause I've spent half my life out there
You wouldn't disagree
Do you see me, do you see?
Do you like me
Do you like me standing there?
Do you see me, do you see me?
Does anyone care?
Unhappiness where's when I was young
And we didn't give a damn
'Cause we were raised
To see life as fun and take it if we can
My mother, my mother
She'd hold me
She'd hold me when I was out there
My father, my father
He liked me, well, he liked me
Does anyone care?
Understand what I've become
It wasn't my design
And people everywhere think
Something better than I am
But I miss you, I miss
'Cause I liked it
'Cause I liked it
When I was out there
Do you know this, do you know
You did not find me
You did not find
Does anyone care?
Unhappiness where's when I was young
And we didn't give a damn
'Cause we were raised
To see life as fun and take it if we can
My mother, my mother
She'd hold me
She'd hold me when I was out there
My father, my father
He liked me, well, he liked me
Does anyone care?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone care?
The song "Ode to my family" by The Cranberries is about the lead singer Dolores O'Riordan's childhood memories of growing up in Ireland. She reflects on the lack of attention and understanding she received as a child, and yearns for someone to truly see and care for her. The first verse sets the scene of initial confusion and disappointment, as she implores the listener not to turn away and acknowledge what she is saying. She expresses frustration with spending so much of her life feeling misunderstood, and questions whether anyone truly cares about her.
In the chorus, O'Riordan contrasts her current state of unhappiness with the carefree attitude she and her friends had as children. They didn't care about societal norms or expectations, but just lived in the moment and enjoyed life. She sings wistfully about her mother, who provided comfort and safety during her difficult times, and also about her father, who she feels loved her despite her imperfections.
The second verse delves deeper into O'Riordan's feelings of inadequacy, as she regrets not being able to achieve what others expect of her. She feels constrained by others' expectations, and yearns to return to the simpler, carefree time of her childhood.
Overall, "Ode to my family" is a poignant reflection on the value of acceptance and understanding, and the importance of feeling loved for who you are.

Intro
Understand the things I say
I want you to really listen to me
Don't turn away from me
Please don't ignore me
'Cause I've spent half my life out there
I've been lost or feeling alone for a long time
You wouldn't disagree
You can probably relate to that feeling
Do you see me, do you see?
Do you recognize and acknowledge me?
Do you like me
Do you accept and appreciate me?
Do you like me standing there?
Am I important to you and do I matter?
Do you notice, do you know
Do you pay attention to me and understand me?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone really care about me?
Unhappiness where's when I was young
I was unhappy when I was young
And we didn't give a damn
But we didn't care at the time
'Cause we were raised
Because we were brought up
To see life as fun and take it if we can
To enjoy life and seize opportunities
My mother, my mother
My mother
She'd hold me
She used to comfort me
She'd hold me when I was out there
When I was feeling alone or lost
My father, my father
My father
He liked me, well he liked me
He cared about me
Does anyone care?
Am I still important to anyone?
Understand what I've become
Realize who I am now
It wasn't my design
My life didn't go as planned
And people everywhere think
And others judge me or have opinions about me
Something better than I am
That I'm not good enough
But I miss you, I miss
But I miss the people who cared for me
'Cause I liked it
Because I enjoyed that sense of belonging or love
When I was out there
When I was around them
Do you know this, do you know
Do you understand what I'm saying?
You did not find me
You didn't reach out to me when I was gone
You did not find
You didn't come to me
Does anyone care?
Does anyone care enough to try and find me?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone care at all?
Does anyone care?
Is there anyone who actually cares?
Does anyone care?
Or am I still alone?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone really, truly care?
Does anyone care?
Or will I always be asking this question?
