Ride
The Dandy Warhols Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're my ride
I'm out my window
It's alright
If you've got candy-o
You're so cool
And not much older
But you know how to drive
Baby, you're my ride

I slip outside
And to the corner
Roll down your drive
Before you start it
I'm no fool
Not like your father

Awake outside
Baby, you're my ride

Overall Meaning

The Dandy Warhols’s song Ride talks about a relationship between two people, where one of them is dependent on the other for transportation. The song opens with the singer acknowledging that the person they rely on for rides is their “ride” while they lean out of their window. The reliance on this other person is almost childlike as they ask if they have candy. The chorus talks about the driver being “cool” and the fact that they know how to drive, indicating that the singer is drawn to this person because of their ability to transport them.

In the second verse, the singer sneaks out to meet their “ride” on the corner and asks them to roll down the driveway before starting the car, indicating that the singer is secretly meeting their ride. The singer then seems to be aware that the person driving them is significantly older but nevertheless wants to be driven by them as they know how to drive. The chorus repeats, and the song ends with the singer affirming that this person is their “ride” and that they rely on them outside their house.

The lyrics of Ride can be interpreted in a variety of ways since the lyrics aren’t very explicit. The song could be about a relationship where one person is more dominant. The power dynamic could be seen as problematic since one person is so dependent on the other. However, the lyrics could also be viewed as an illustration of a mutually-beneficial relationship, where both people know what they want and get it from each other.

One of the most underrated songs by The Dandys in my opinion!

davidpar2

Their best song, in my opinion. “Ride” is to The Dandys what “Dreams” is to The Cranberries

They all look and sound so stunning in this. Amazing. How I wish there was more music like this.

I'm from Barcelona and some years ago did a road trip with my girlfriend of that time. We both were fans of the Dandys and spent some days in Oregon. One day, walking by the center of Portland, we saw a demonstration against fluorized water and Zia was there. We were in Portland from Barcelona partly because of her band, we met her and we didn't say anything. No regrets to ourselves but, come on... hahaha holy shit.
