just because they're victimes of something on their own, dosn't mean they can't LIE or have flawed-perceptions about their situations.

in fact, that's one of the things that caracterize them the most, a desperate need to get their fill even if it's at the cost serious things.
lying to your spouse to go to the bar, lying about needing money to use it to feed your addiction, lying to authorities to hide your lack of sobriety,
there is also a awful lot of lying and deceiving yourself that play a major-role into substance-abuse, it's called "being in denial".

ask someone who's starting to get a substance-abuse,
and i believe most of the time they'll tell you they either can stop whenever they want, or it dosn't affect them.
substance-abuse might be one of the condition that affect the most peoples and how how much trust you can put into them.

if something VERY OBVIOUSLY under the influence, and if they looked like they had DECADES of substance-abuse (like a "crackhead") asked you for money,
you would obviously immediately doubt their motives and you might even get scared of not giving them what they ask.

actually, what is very wrong on both a moral-point and just as a opinion on the matter,
is to argue that you shouldn't doubt them at all, it's both extremely irresponsable and dangerous.
just because someone suffer from something, dosn't mean that they're meant to be blindly believed.
it's very unfortunate, but again substance-abuse weight HEAVILY on peoples-minds.

i think his outlook is a more healthier than yours.
i don't agree with him, but showing doubt is definitely something rational, plus he didn't seem to express any contemps.
he made an observation, and then expressed his doubts and his reasoning in a matter of fact way.

My brother was murdered by his wife. Dr. Phil invited my family, but we passed. My brothers wife's family agreed to come on and basically told a story with fabricated facts unchecked. They said if we didn't like it we could come and respond, we passed again because we didn't see a purpose or point. Her family came on again after my brother's wife was convicted and put in prison. Once again we passed and Phil sided with them. Screw him.

Dr. Phil is like this psychiatrist I used to have who told me I lied for attention while I was telling him that my mom was abusive - as she was right next to me smiling like “see what I have to deal with?”. Never told her to leave and have me explain. Just told me I was lying as I had bruises on my arms from her.

I’m sorry but when a teenage girl is saying “I’m breaking down her door or she’s breaking down my door” I immediately thought “oh so you’re just doing what you were taught to do, you’re just emulating your mom yet you’re the one who’s out of control?”

I remember the day my opinion of Dr Phil changed. Two parents brought their daughter to the show, and talked about how terrible she was during the opening scenes. My mom and I were ready to see her be a problem child, but during the interview I found myself sympathizing with her more and more. Her parents were quick to shut her down and throw allegations her way, while she sobbed and tried to defend herself. I don't remember what caused it, but the mom cut her daughter off with "She's just being dramatic again" after a serious allegation she made. I remembered hearing that line from adults when I came to them with real problems. It seriously made me reconsider what a victim is, and how Phil sensationalizes them. I couldn't comfortably watch the show after that.

Yea, I felt similar after I saw an episode from two years ago where the woman was so drunk it felt irresponsible and unsafe for her to have her on stage. I realized he was promising a magical cure for her problems if she allowed him to humiliate her. He is just exploiting people at their most vulnerable for money. I didn't really agree with a lot of what he did before that, but I hadn't realized the extent of everything until that episode.

Danielle Bregoli is a good example of "I may be dumb, but I ain't stupid." I'm glad she got to tell her story.
The fact they had people that drunk and that high on stage is disgusting. That drunk man needed to be taken to the hospital, not questioned. That pregnant woman clearly couldn't consent to getting "help" no matter how many times they repeated it to her, because she was barely conscious. What she needed was to be brought back to the hospital if he was really that worried about her and her baby.

She was never dumb... she was very intelligent even at the time, just not the kind of intelligence that comes from books and formal education. I think she was too intelligent for her own good as a young child and the adults in her life didn't know how to nurture that. As someone who's been in one of those programs, when the Dr. Phil craze was going around on YouTube I always felt a certain disgust and uncomfortableness from all the memes about sending kids to the ranch. I'm just glad that we're at a place now where that behavior and those places are being more publicly condemned. The amount of concern and genuine disgust I've seen in just this comment section alone towards "wilderness therapy" programs has honestly been very relieving. Some small part of me never stopped questioning whether I was wrong for hating the place I went to. I thought maybe it had actually helped a lot of kids, and I was just an exception who felt like I had been traumatized by it instead.

@@hithere911 I looked into it a little more, one website says that patient of his filed sexual assault in 2003 but I couldn't find any other sources mentioning it. The source also mentioned an incident where a woman was sexually assaulted at a facility he sent her too as well as general creepyness towards young women. I found a Quora post saying it was revoked by the board for complaints of sexual advances however every other source says he renounced it himself, although I could see him renouncing it in order to avoid further investigation by the board.

Aside from the sexual assault (hopefully anyone who does such a thing, especially to children, rots in prison for life), what exactly do people think is supposed to happen at those troubled kid places? They are a bootcamp of sorts and meant to be a last case scenario for kids who are beyond the usual angsty, out of control child. If you aren't cool with rough situations like that, don't take your kid to one. If you are cool with it, do a lot of research before choosing one bc there is a long history of similar places going well beyond what's legally, ethically, and morally correct. It's great to want to straighten out your troubled child but you don't want them scarred for life, physically, emotionally, and/or sexually, in the process.

The worst part about his show to me is that as a trained clinical psychologist (although his license was renounced) he has a thorough understanding of what is troubling the people sitting in front of him and why. He understands the most likely reasons, causes and thought processes of for example the girl who thinks she is Pocahontas, that there is a mental health issue at play yet sees no issue displaying it on air like he did and even reinforcing it through media play. As psychologists and counsellors, we are trained to look at our patients' lives through their own eyes as well as our own and understand their vulnerabilities so we can acknowledge and treat them together. Dr. Phil however uses this training to spot potential for mockery and entertaining his audience through the suffering and shame of his guests. It's so predatory.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about my friend nikki who was on the show. She was the other pregnant heroin addict. The show went with her to pick up, filmed her doing drugs and all this crazy stuff. I think one of the cases that officially turned me away from Mr. Phil was the woman who abused her boyfriend and Mr. Phil essentially told him he needed to man up and bend to her requests. He had very real concerns and desires and Mr. Phil acted like he was the villain for asking for the bare minimum of respect and human decency, but he turned the whole crowd against him like he was a dog.

I was in a residential treatment program for a year in Utah and they used isolationist techniques like this 1:20:51 to punish kids who ran away or had any bad behavior (as mild as not running in the mile run we had to do every Sunday). I also experienced severe sexual discrimination. The boys had a better campus, opportunities, more time outside, larger food portions, sports and activities, etc. I wasn’t allowed to show any skin because the “boys can’t control themselves.”There are still facilities open like this. My friend just passed away a couple days before Christmas because of neglect of care from the medical staff. Right now the school is prohibited from accepting any new students and I’m sure is facing a major lawsuit. I got a lot out of the experience but there were things that are completely unforgivable. It’s no wonder that schools like this are allowed to operate in places like Utah where the laws are so lax. My friend wasn’t the only one who fell victim to the neglect of schools like these. I remember having to kiss up to the medical staff so I could get proper care and treatment, and if any serious medical claims were mentioned they brushed you off as a lying mental patient, just like all the others. In addition wilderness programs like turnabout ranch are actually way long than just 3-5 days. I’ve had friends that were out in the wild forest of North Carolina during winter for months without any supplies. If students tried to run away there was a possibility of death due to the elements.

i am a heroin addict (recovering) and my mom, in the height of my addiction (16-19) reached out to these shows (intervention, dr phil) to get help for me because i was out of control. thank fucking god i never got sent to those hell holes. my heart absolutely goes out to these young people struggling; no one deserves to have their worst aired for millions of people to laugh at. at the time of being high, id have thought it was a joke or surreal or just me being high but to have to detox through that would have been absolute hell. i wasn’t a great kid (thankfully i have great support), but i was and am mentally troubled and exploiting that would have pushed it over the edge. i have so much love and admiration for those who chose to get clean in general, but so much more for those who pulled through under public scrutiny. dr phil is exploitative and manipulative and not at all what a troubled teen needs to “get better”. i hope his pillow is always on the warm side and always has a kink in his back. we are addicts, but we are humans that are suffering. we don’t deserve to be exploited to line his pockets. and i used to binge him constantly telling myself “im not THAT bad!”. he’s a fucking monster. his opinion (which he always emphasizes) is terrible. making money off of troubled humans is deplorable. i hope he gets paper cuts on every check he signs.

from the standpoint of getting anyone help, it's generally much better to work with the person needing help as much as possible (if possible). In the US, involentary conmmitment usually can only be done if the person is a clear danger to themselves or others. There's some legal things you can do to get people help, but your success rate of ther person following through with treatment and getting help they need is much, much higher if they feel heard and in control.

It's a delicate tightrope to walk; you want to be firm but permitting. Some times the mental help someone already has is.... shit. But even then, it would be worth at least trying and building trust so you don't accidentally drive someone further from getting help.

True like when I was a kid my parent would take electronics away if I did something bad. Problem was that the only way that's worked to manage my stress was listening to music or playing games. Now normally getting them taken away for a day or two wouldn't be bad but she would take it away for a week at the minimum no matter how bad it was. That was always the base line and that entire time all it did was make me hate my parent because It made me feel miserable. Proof that using harsh disaplain by taking the thing they both value the most but also use for their mental state does not help. In fact it worsens the situation.

Omg same! A few years ago I went on a Dr. Phil binge where I watched as many clips on YouTube of him that I could find. It started off with me mostly agreeing with the things Dr. Phil was saying, but I became increasingly uneasy the more clips I saw. That clip was the final straw for me. It made me livid seeing the way that girl was humiliated on the show. The girl was even mature enough to remain mostly calm and dignified even after her boundaries were clearly crossed.

They couldn’t always exactly put their finger on why, but usually it came to whether they got a sense that there was some kind of bullying in the dynamic. I've always thought that daytime therapists like this were insanely exploitive to people in need. It's not therapy - it's using a person who genuinely requires mental help to entertain, while publicly shaming them and cementing the perception of them as who they are in their current state. It doesn't matter what kind of strides a person like Sexy Vegan or Bhad Baby make, or if they even become "normal" in simplest terms. They are forever going to be known to the world as who they were when they came for help.

Dr. Phil may come off as a comforting and approachable presence, and I won't pretend he doesn't often give good advice. But the fact of it is that his profession often needs to be a private and vulnerable thing, and his platform turns it into a circus for people to look at the freaks. What’s sickening is the amount of people that think these kids DESERVE all of this awful shit just because they’re badly behaved. They don’t even do half of that shit is most US prisons. And abusing someone isn’t going to fix their attitude. It’s going to scare them and stress them out and often times bring out more bad behavior. That kid with a history of violence and mental health issues didn’t need “tough love and hard work” he needed actually psychiatric intervention and treatment. These kids need therapy and their families need lifestyle changes. There was an episode where a man was constantly being abused by his wife, and asked Dr.Phil for help. He had called the police multiple times, but his wife was never arrested because she always played the victim. She sent him to the hospital on multiple different occasions. He couldn’t leave because she said she would take away his children. Dr.Phil told him he needed to man up, and that it was his fault he was being abused. That’s when I stopped watching Dr.Phil.

My sister's dad was able to win custody because objectively speaking he was the better parent for her. Stable, working, owned a home. Meanwhile my mom was sporadic, broke, homeless even at one point. The judge made the right decision in having my 6 yr old sister live with her dad. Men on the emotional side are almost always put down, laughed at, ridiculed. How dare he get abused by a woman? How dare he cry about *anything*? It's sad and evil because we're all human and a man is just as capable for providing and having custody as a woman can. It's this disgusting attitude towards them that causes many men to not even seek medical help (physically or mentally). Because while the doctors or professionals may not laugh, the male's family or peers might put him down the moment him needing aid is known.

I spent a few years going to the same gastroenterologist when I was in high school for Crohn's Disease. She was an older lady who really seemed to know her shit, I didn't see any reasons to doubt her. However over the course of 3 years I kept deteriorating, no matter what type of pills I would take. Finally, after 3 years when I finally started to get in really bad shape, she sent me to someone else for a second opinion. The doctor looks over my chart, goes over my history, and point blank tells me that the doctor I had been seeing was clearly stuck in the past. Most of the medications I had been on were outdated, a handful of them not even used to treat my condition because they were found to be ineffective. I had essentially gone 3 years completely untreated, with only steroids to control the flare-ups of my Crohn's Disease. She ordered a colonoscopy and found that I had gotten significantly worse since the last scope that was performed, and also that I was likely misdiagnosed (extremely common when it comes to ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease). She made the scary accurate condition that if I don't find a medication that works, I would lose my colon to the disease within 2 years. Fast forward 2 years, I lost my colon to ulcerative colitis June tenth, 2021. I had started seeing another doctor, but by that point it was too late for them to make any meaningful impact on the UC.

TL/DR Second opinions are extremely important. If you have even a shred of doubt about the effectiveness of the treatment you are receiving, get one. It's easy to see an older doctor (like Dr Phil) as being really knowledgeable because of how long they've been in the field, but the medical field is constantly changing.

Some of us have been saying this and waiting for the past 10, 15, 20+ years for him to be recognized and held accountable. Even the promoter of bumfights pointed out how exploitive the show is but it's like people just didn't care. It was more important to look at someone who's an absolute trainwreck than weigh the morality of the situation. For me it was when he decided that a convicted murderer and rapist was innocent after sitting down and speaking with him for an hour or so. Yes, let's ignore the fact his DNA was found inside of a 12 year old victim of violent stranger rape - Dr Phil just "felt" like the man was innocent.

My sister had a friend who actually went on doctor phil. Her friend was struggling with a drug addiction because she had an extremely traumatic experience with waking up next to her boyfriend who passed away while she was sleeping, so she used drugs as a way to cope with his death. Instead of being a voice for her and to treat her like a human who experienced trauma, he talked to her like she was a monster and that she was a bad person. It's really sad.

This was brought up between us because there was a point of time when my sister and I wanted to take a family member on the show for a while, but then the friend told my sister her experience, which is why we never went. I cannot even imagine the severe sadness and pain it is to wake up to someone you love dead.
Edit: I was even thinking about linking the episode here, but I do not want to spread that awful experience around and want to hide her identity because I am not sure if she'd want that attention.

A lot of the time the episodes on YouTube are good because you can read how people react in the comments and they are more enlightened to how the approaches are not always ideal and are more supportive of the guests.

I just found out that after a 20-year absence from the screen, Shelley Duvall is actually going to be starring in another horror movie. My father was in grad school with "Dr" Phil. Said he loved the sound of his own voice. Would take every opportunity to turn a discussion into a lecture of his own, often even talking over their professors. Dad wasn't surprised when Phil went into TV because he thought his ego conflicted with actual practice. Phil had someone on his show who made homeless people fight for entertainment, said someone came on the show dressed as him in a "you and me do exactly the same thing" type gesture and Phil basically noped out of the interview because he realised he could not win without the dude also tearing him apart in the process.

Dr. Phil is a monster! The episode that proved this was involving a father molesting his daughter. The parents were no longer together, so the father had visitations. The mother had long suspected he was harming the daughter and would protest outside the courthouse and his home with signs and other people. Dr. Phil ripped into the mother and said SHE was crazy. When the mother would pick up the daughter who was about 4-6 years old, she would immediately say, "I had a great time and dad didn't touch my privates". Dr. Phil even framed the show as the "crazy mom was over protective mom going through any length to ruin a father daughter relationship". WELP, the dad was eventually arrested for possession of CP and distributing it. Dr. Phil invited the mother back on the show for damage control, but by that time it was too late for him to save face. I hated him ever since.

It speaks volumes that Danielle came forward as a means of support for someone who had been assaulted. I never saw her episode but I remember going to high school with girls like her. Often times girls like Danielle while abrasive and quick to jump into a fistfight it was never out of just pure spite. It was their fight or flight always being on edge. This was her dealing with trauma. The fact that she comes forward about her experiences not as a way to get support for herself but to lend support to another person who went threw something much worse says a lot about her. I think it was about calling out Phil's bullshit but it was more about shining a light on the fact that the abuses only happen because of the power Phil holds. No one listens to the "out of control teenager" but they will listen to him when the out of control teen most likely needs to be taken seriously and listen to!

I can also attest to that. For how people go "how dare that girl be so disrespectful", I've known quite a few girls like Danielle B, and most after talking with them longer than a amonth aren't usually remotely near bad people. It seems more like a harsh exterior that's used honestly to ward off dudes more than other chicks. Not saying she's good--definitely behavior issues. But like lots of gals like that I feel get more harsh treatment than dudes who act arrogant and materialistic. Like how gals like her display feminity is seen as inherently problematic.

But I do have a sense of empathy as it seems like a lot of this sort of I will fight you no matter what attitude. Comes more from Danielle thinking that if she doesn't protect herself others will not protect her and if she doesn't ward off certain people by coming off as this hard very gangster girl. That she's about to get hurt herself. I don't have a degree in psychology. So take this all with a grain of salt but I feel like anyone who has been around girls like her know that that comes from a sense of feeling like the world is not going to protect you and the people around you are not going to protect you so you have to do everything you can to protect yourself. The most fucked up thing is that someone like Phil holds a lot of power because of the moniker of doctor because he's seen as this psychologist who helps people whereas Danielle was just an out of control teenager. There was no need to look at the systemic issues that may have created the problem in his mind there was no need to address a lot of the things that were causing this. Apparently before being put onto the show to like make her look like this horrible human being her mother have been going through Cancer Treatments at one point. She had an absentee father who had moved on and started off a new family will never supporting his first child AKA Danielle either emotionally physically or just financially and so you have this girl who's basically been disowned by one parent not for anything that she's done but just because that parent has decided the new life they have no longer can include their original child which is fucked up. Then you have her mother who is now a single parent unable to fully support her child emotionally because she's having to work so many hours to ensure that she can financially support that child. On top of that you've got puberty you have a lot of tells that she's going to a title one school and may not feel the safest at school doesn't feel safe at home doesn't feel like she has a safe place anywhere. That does not excuse the behaviors but it does give context to them and I feel like anyone worth their damn would see that. Going back to the fact that she did find a way to capitalize on her appearance on the show I don't blame her. I have at this point seeing clips of it and it seems like they're doing everything they can to bait her into a fight or acting unruly in a way and when she became a meme she capitalized on that seeing away to support herself to create a brand and well again I am not a huge fan of it just because it doesn't mesh with my sensibilities. I see that it wasn't her just being a money hungry little brat it was her seeing a way to finally support herself and find a way to keep herself safe. Like I said if she had just come out and said oh yeah this not on the other had happened at turnabout very few would have believed her and then that's on the fact of the public will oftentimes disregard the experiences of women who have gone through abuse. Instead she supports someone with even less of a platform than her and says this is what happened to me I believe what happened to this girl happened and the person who sent us there needs to be held accountable.

Sending teenagers with personality and addiction struggles off to the ranch and labeling them as problematic is his worst issue. He never holds the parents accountable, or puts the parents through therapy or counseling when they were the ones who clearly weren’t capable of raising people. Either through abuse or neglect, and blast their kids personal trauma all over public television as an instant fix instead of finding help for themselves and their children.

@@Moonage4 Same. And my parents chose the nuclear option first by sending me off for 5.5 months until the insurance stopped paying. Never occurred to them that maybe we needed to try therapy first. By the time I was discharged, we couldn't afford therapy because of the insurance situation. My mother passed 2 years ago and I'm beginning to see the actual ways our family was so dysfunctional now that she's not here to play her particular role. Family dynamics are so bizarre.

I was almost on Dr. Phil as a kid. Back when I was in elementary school my parents were going through a custody battle, and my mom decided to call up Dr. Phil, try to get them to host her, my dad and I, to “sort it out.” They accepted. Dr. Phil’s assistant called my dad saying they had decided to invite us on, and he swiftly hung up on them. Even at the time I thought it was the right decision, I was terrified at the thought of being on television, as a young kid already experiencing the beginnings of depression and gender dysphoria; now I’m a psychology student and am terrified of how terrible the whole system he has going on is.

There is a reason why actual practising psychologists/therapists never antagonise their clients (at least they shouldn't be doing that). It's not going to help anything, it will probably either discourage the person suffering from getting further help, because they don't feel listened to, or result in them internalising the accusations, and denying themselves the right to express their feelings, because they feel like they might harm someone else by doing so - an unstable mind is fragile, and should be approached with caution, and, above all, understanding.

My therapist would never accuse me, or push me into doing/talking about something that I don't want to, because that wouldn't help me on my road to improvement, that would probably ultimately make me close up even more, and refuse help, because of the negative experience.

I dont understand why so many people still call Phil educated when his education on mental health is outdated by decades now - licensed therapists are (sometimes, depending on the subject matter) required to take updated classes on new findings that updates them on changes and reeducates them; and often they'll put a pause on practice while they do these courses (usually rotating groups of a few of them meet wither online or in class for anywhere between 3 days to 2 weeks depending on subject matter) as I've learned from my partners mother, who got her license the same year Phil did - she herself says that the average citizen is more knowledgeable in mental health now than a therapist that got their education even in the 80's and refuse to participate in update classes. Phil got his license in the 70's and hasn't updated anything since the 2000s - and I don't even know if in the US therapists and Psychiatrists are required to do update classes. Dr. Phil is undeniably, undereducated in Mental Health and Psychology now - and you can hear it everything he's said the past decade. Nearly none of his advice follows anything we now know about mental health, and often his advice leads to more trauma and abuse. There's a reason you will not find a therapist or physiatrist in 2022 that think's Dr. Phil is smart.

I watched some of it and had to check what year it was aired because of how dated it was, but no it wasn’t aired sometime back in the early 90’s when I could have given him the benefit of doubt. If he hadn’t practiced before then he might not have felt a need to update his knowledge to modern day standards, but no it was from 2018 so he’s not just old enough to have fossilised knowledge, he’s still trying to understand the world from the perspective of a dinosaur 😬 I mean in all fairness, he’s a tv show host and his target demographic is mostly old people, so he doesn’t really need to update his knowledge more than the bare minimum to stay relevant as long as they’re still alive. It’s just seeing him as more than that that’s problematic and his behaviour is very manipulative in that people do still seem to think he’s a credible source when he’s only technically “dr” Phil, the practicality was something he decided was more a hindrance than a benefit. He’s a tv show host that in the past has been educated in a field that requires continuous maintenance to keep it up to date, yes, I’m unsure if that’s mandatory in the US myself though, but that should be concerning if it’s not since it’s for every type of medical professional as well as teachers etc, any field that might require an update gets called to have one. There were teachers that barely knew how to use computers because they were educated before they were commonplace, to say that they wouldn’t need to be taught how to use computers before teaching students how to use computers is just absurd, you’d struggle to get any job now if you didn’t understand how to send an email 💀 it would have held children back so much since home computers still weren’t available to everyone by the time people started having smartphone. So similarly for healthcare, mental or physical, delaying treatment or giving the wrong treatment is either a waste of time at best, and life threatening at worst, stops being funny then

What gets me is that Phil was more keen on sending "destructive" teens to the camps and such instead of actual therapy.
Listening to what they do and how they act just screams impulse control and ADHD/Autism, at least to me, a teen who struggled with angry outbursts and impulse control who was later diagnosed with both.
But no, they're just treated like delinquents. They're not listened to, or taken seriously.
I used to watch the Pewds videos where he would react to the teens and them being told "Hey, we're literally gonna kidnap you and take you to a facility against your own will" and laugh.

But now it just makes me sick.

The ranch Phil sent kids to was so abusive multiple kids died there. One was a 14 year old boy who’s family didn’t find out for 4 years. One kid had a breakdown and tried to steal a car which resulted in the death of one of the adults and the injury of another that eventually killed them 2 years later.

There's an episode of "Dr." Phil where a teen didn't want to go to school because his friend killed himself, and used drugs to help with his anxiety, his mom recorded him while mocking him and making fun of him, and Phil McGraw defended the mom. The teen also said in that episode that school made him want to kill himself, and his mom was more worried about him hurting someone else, Child Protective Services should definitely get involved at that point, and Phil's show should be cancelled.

My mom watched Phil for years, and he seemed to revel in berating kids, calling them "entitled" even if they're just asking to be treated like human beings, and excusing/encouraging parents' toxic/abusive behavior at times. (A friend of my dad's was apparently on the show years and years ago--along with her toxic mom--and Phil didn't offer any real help, just backed up the mom on her awful behavior.) I worry about all the young people who've been on his show over the years. And I hope the teenager you mentioned ended up okay. He was dealing with so much, and I'm sure going on the show only magnified it 100x over.

I'm a recovering heroin addict. When I went to rehab they didn't give us round the clock supervision necessarily snd we could leave if we wanted. They couldn't hold us there. However, there was someone always there and they would check on us every hour while we slept. So Idk. Maybe that's considered round the clock. Also, If these addicts don't want help, forcing them will not work. Might for a brief amount of time but Dr Phil swearing at them and threatening them to get help is so unhelpful and you'd think he of all people would know that. I NEVER got clean from being forced to or from being yelled and cussed at. It's hard watching these people, who just want help, being talked down to 😞

You shouldn't shame/guilt/bully/force anyone to try to stop their addiction even if you think that might save them, its entirely possible that could just make it worse, give them more problems and make them even more reluctant to stop than before. I had to make up my own mind and commit nothing could have forced me to stop short of dying but as soon as I made up my mind I was done I really was done. I have been clean for 11 years on methadone it saved my life I couldn’t stay clean before it and honestly I will most likely stay on it for the rest of my life because I’m a chronic addict Inhave been on some type of drug everyday since I was a little kid on ADD medication I started smoking weed in 6th grade and drinking. I have been on opiates since I was 16 I broke my shoulder and needed surgery after they stopped giving me pills I never stopped taking them and the longest I was clean was 6 months and I swear I was dope sick the whole six months I never got better I just got more miserable and drank more and more just to go to sleep I was uncomfortable until I got high again and I’ll never forget that feeling of relief after months of being sick and not sleeping That’s when I turned into a real addict I told myself I’ll just do enough to be ok but that’s not really how it works I fell hard and it took a long time to make up my mind to get clean now It’s been a long time since I used and unless I somehow get taken off of my methadone I’ll never get high again.

As a matter of fact I've had 2 boyfriends who had family members that fought tough love would work and they're both dead so no that actually doesn't work. just means that you got sober because you felt like you had to. Or felt embarrassed or ashamed. There is a huge difference between enabling somebody and being too gentle with them and supporting a loved one from a distance without enabling them but also without belittling them

As someone who has been in and out of mental and rehab facilities throughout my childhood, I've been extremely traumatized and don't support the way most are structured. The ranch camp has undoubtedly traumatized the people sent there and affected how they live their lives today. Those who survived. Despite their flaws most of them were troubled kids who just needed help and support and sadly Dr. Phil and most involved around him failed them. I wish the best for them in their healing.

hearing how the staff (most likely) gave that dude a xanax literally made my jaw drop. mixing alcohol and benzos is literally life threatening. both depress the central nervous system, and slows things like breathing down. it's incredibly dangerous

I remembered being disgusted at that. I had a friend who had alcoholism and got Xanax from a friend one day. More than one pill but not enough to make a sober person act like they lost their grip. I didn’t know about the Xanax until after this friend was screaming half an inch from my eat while I drove, and then decided he wanted to get out so he grabbed the wheel and set my side of the car into a cement pole. I’m barely 5 feet tall so the airbag deployment hit my chest so hard it stopped my heart and the speed (55 ish) broke several ribs, severely injured my neck, and gave me what I would call a “minor” tbi even though my Nero doesn’t say that. I had to be extricated from the car and then have the backboard pulled out the windshield so I could go in a helicopter. The former friend doesn’t even remember taking my phone and breaking it, and taking my wallet from
My purse and spending a lot. His family said they had seen him drunk plenty and it wasn’t like that and then then saw him the night of the crash. They said Xanax brought out the devil in him. Idk about that. I do think there is something horrible about Xanax and alcohol let’s it put you and others in dangerous. Stay safe everyone.

Disgusting and predatory for sure. ..but it takes A LOT more than a single Xanax and a couple drinks to shut down the respiratory system. It's most commonly an OD of benzos and opiates that shuts down the lungs. Very dangerous combo.

I’m torn on this one. I really want to believe him and he seemed believable when he said it. But man are addicts experts at lying. They can convince even the most skeptical person they’re telling the straight up truth when it’s a straight up lie. Soooo, scummy (my opinion) television producers on one side and a hard core addict on the other? I’m not believing either of them.

The camp he was entangled with for years was a terrible place for problematic kids. Those kids were tortured there and sexually assaulted.
I hope he never sleeps at night because of the evil those kids endured.

I remember watching dr. Phil often with my family, but stopped when I watched an episode about two girls dad transitioning into a woman, and everyone was berating her and calling her selfish. Even the ads leading up to it framed her like a horror monster rather than a human being who made a difficult decision.

It really upset me seeing the reaction from the public to Danielle's video. It was mostly vitriolic hate and disgusting sexual comments. She's already famous. She's already rich. She doesn't need to call out doctor Phil for clout anymore. These places are toxic, abusive, and cult like. My friend was sent to MN teen challenge for drug addiction, was assaulted, and later took her own life. The troubled teen industry is so fucked up and I wish more people took it seriously.
