Man
The Deal Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is just a poor man's morphine

Been on each other's nerves so long we're all pins and needles
You only think that I'm in vogue and I think I've got feelings
I've become your fashion statement that's almost out of style
Those buttons on your denim... define your person
And my hands on your zipper... so uncertain
T.V. taught me to believe in perfection...

It calls to the center of your paranoid soul
If you get a little bit
Then you'll want a little more
Oh love, is a poor man's morphine
Love, is a poor man's morphine...

Underneath my skin like you've been your syringe will drain me
Hangout at my sacrifice you find entertaining
But I'll find happiness in my head among the thoughts you inject
Learning to accept... I'm unrealistic
Coming to expect... we're never finished
T.V. taught me to believe in perfection...

It calls to the center of your paranoid soul
If you get a little bit
Then you'll want a little more
Oh love, is a poor man's morphine
Love, is a poor man's morphine...

It calls to the center of your paranoid soul
If you get a little bit
Then you'll want a little more
Oh love, is a poor man's morphine
Love, is a poor man's morphine...

Oh love, is a poor man's morphine
Love, is a poor man's morphine...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Man" by The Deal talk about the complexities of love and its addictive nature. The line "love is just a poor man's morphine" implies that love may provide a temporary escape or relief from pain but doesn't have the long-lasting effect of a powerful drug. The song talks about how the two people in the relationship have been getting on each other's nerves for so long that they're like pins and needles, and how one person thinks the other is just using them as a fashion statement. The lines "T.V. taught me to believe in perfection...It calls to the center of your paranoid soul" suggests that societal expectation about love and relationships make people paranoid about achieving the perfect relationship.

The line "Underneath my skin like you've been your syringe will drain me" portrays the image of one person draining the other emotionally, while the other person continues to find amusement in their partner's problems. The chorus "If you get a little bit, then you'll want a little more" is highlighting the addictive nature of love, and how once a person gets a taste of it, they will long for more.

The lyrics convey a sense of frustration and unrealism towards love, where one person is tired of being used and the other person is just enjoying the ride. The song speaks to the conflict between wanting love and wanting to escape from it, speaking to the heart of human loneliness and the desire for connection, but also the pain that comes with it.

I just bought one of those little cases he shows at the end in a bright pink "leopard" design for storing my ear buds, so now I can spot that case no matter where I leave it by accident. It's surprisingly sturdy and big enough to use for something like jewelry when you're on a short trip (a necklace, a couple of pairs of earrings, a couple of rings).

I also bought one of the window insulation kits (it only covers one window) but haven't put it up yet, but the plastic seems sturdy enough.

And I bought two of those oven mitts he mentions, in cute designs (not Christmas), and was surprised at how thick they are.

But the more interesting purchase that trip (I haven't been in a Dollar Tree store in more than two years) was what I originally went there to buy - plastic storage boxes for my wigs. I have seven.

I found what I guess are supposed to be food storage boxes, with vented lids, that are deeper than a shoe box and slightly shorter. They were $1 for the box and $1 for the lid -- I will never understand why containers, trash cans and pots and pans are sold without including lids. Anyway, the boxes are perfect for my wigs and a lot cheaper than other storage options designed specifically for wigs that I was looking at on Amazon.
