Surprisingly, they did this under two different names. They hit with "Last Time Around" as the Del-Vetts, then changed their name to Pride and Joy for a movie deal, and hit again with the Dennis Dahlquist-penned "Girl," which was supposed to have been featured in the movie, which never came out. They also were involved with an STP oil treatment promotion with a single called "I Call My Baby STP."

This record was recorded by a group of Black Girls from Yonkers, NY.....With Jessie on lead, Florence Holland, Jackie Scott, Jeanie Johnson and this other girl on background harmonies. They won at the Apollo talent show. Im sure it was "covered" by some other girls but they sang the original....I want a boy for Christmas, Repeat After me and Will you love me in Heaven.

That's really strange and very interesting. The A-side of this, "Repeat After Me," was released twice as well. It was originally issued with "I Want A Boy For Christmas." That issue was deleted shortly after the release and put out again with this on the flip

Who sang it first? The Delvets, recording for End Records, or Ral Donner, singing for Gone Records? Both labels were created in 1957, in New York City. Both were established and owned by George Goldner. My strong belief is, Goldner had The Delvets release the composition first. Why? Goldner had a great respect for music performed by Black and Latino artists. He recognized real talent, and skin color didn't matter to him. He signed Tito Puente, Joe Loco, Machito, Ray Barretto and others, producing and recording their music. In 1953, he signed the Doo Wop group, The Crows, and they had their first major selling hit, Gee, crossing over into the White market. The music industry was changing, and Goldner helped make it happen. He signed The Cleftones, The Valentines, Frankie Lyman and the Teenagers. Goldner truly championed The Doo Wop Sound. When teenage girls in high school were practicing their singing abilities on city sidewalks, in school yards, at their parents' apartments, he signed The Chantels, who delivered He's Gone, and Maybe, and The Girl Group Sound was born. Goldner signed Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Flamingos and The Dubs.
His true passion to encourage Black artists to record and succeed never diminished, but he also knew, racism was still around in the 1950's. Every time he recorded Black artists, he took a chance, hoping their voices, sound and music would succeed. To assure that he could make a steady profit from his hard working endeavors, beginning in 1957, he balanced his roster with White artists, like Bill Haley & The Comets. In the early 1960's, he signed Ral Donner, Marilyn Monroe, The Four Seasons and Johnny Rivers.
However, his true flame burned for Black artists, and he had a sincere interest in perfecting The Girl Group Sound: The Chantels, The Delvets, The Jelly Beans, The Dixie Cups, The Shangri-Las, The Butterflys, The Ad-Libs, he believed in all of them.
Returning to Will You Love Me In Heaven, I truly believe The Delvets were first to sing it. Their voices, the musical arrangement, the harmonies, carry everything George Goldner loved about Doo Wop. When you hear the earnest voices of these teenage girls, you believe them. They're not trying to sound polished. They sound honest, sincere, and they take this song to a new level of joy.
Ral Donner: What's a boy born in Chicago, doing, adopting a Southern accent and trying so hard to copy Elvis Presley? His version of this song? Sorry, but it's too slick, no emotional presence. My belief is that George Goldner was hedging his bets, getting this other version out, to assure coverage on radio stations that still held an aversion to Black music.
Now, a dark side to this record: The publisher was Alan K Music. As in Alan Klein, who used every ploy to become the lawyer for The Beatles, representing their highly profitable empire. He was a prime architect to their breakup. Not stopping there, he managed to get control of The Rolling Stones entire 1960's catalogue of music. All he ever cared about were profits, not artistry.

The unsung hero in this whole story is Richard Barrett, who had "great ears"---and was the music director for Gone/End, etc. He went on to manage The Chantels. Another wonderful girls group that Goldner had was The Deltairs, who had "Lullabye of the Bells"---I think they were a Goldner group----and The Joytones, who did a superb version of "My Foolish Heart" for Rama, one of Goldner's early labels. BTW, The Joytones were put together by Raoul Cita, who also had the incredible Harptones.

I'm trying to follow... This actual song was the flip of She's Everything by Ral Donner? It was quite rare for labels to switch artists on the a and b sides back then. That would be truly, truly rare. I have heard Ral's version of this song but prefer The Delvets. Not a knock against Ralph.. He's a damn good singer
