Bad Girl
The Detroit Cobras Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time was in a vacuum when I wanted to be free, yeah yeah
But now my adolescence has all but left me
I could have stayed another day, but it would be wrong
But you would just get sick of me,
We both stayed far too long

But I said no
I must go
I'm not the one you want though I know you think so
'Cause I'm a bad girl,
I'm a bad girl,
I'm a bad girl,
But I'm too good for you
My Scooby Doo

Our time was so special and that means so much to me
But you can tell by the click of my heels that I am gonna leave
You could get down on your knees and say you were so true
But that just won't do us no good, 'cause I am sick of you

And I said no
I must go
I'm not the one you want though I know you think so
'Cause I'm a bad girl,
I'm a bad girl,
I'm a bad girl,

But I'm too good for you
My Scooby Doo

Overall Meaning

The Detroit Cobras' song Bad Girl is a classic rock tune that speaks about a woman breaking free from a relationship that no longer serves her. The lyrics convey a sense of independence, with the woman declaring that she is a "bad girl" who is "too good" for her partner. The imagery of clicking heels and the catchy melody make this song a perfect anthem for anyone looking to assert their freedom and move on from a stagnant relationship.

In the first two lines, the song establishes a sense of timelessness: "Time was in a vacuum when I wanted to be free." This suggests a feeling of being stuck in the past, with the singer longing for something that can never be regained. However, the next line "But now my adolescence has all but left me" shows that the singer has grown up and moved on. The chorus then repeats the refrain "I'm a bad girl," emphasizing the woman's rebellious nature and her determination to break free from anything that holds her back.

The second verse is a bit more confrontational, with the singer expressing outright contempt for her ex-partner: "You could get down on your knees and say you were so true / But that just won't do us no good, 'cause I am sick of you." Here the song takes a turn towards bitterness, with the woman rejecting any attempts at reconciliation and asserting that she is better off without her former flame. The song then ends with the same catchy chorus, leaving the listener with the image of a bold and independent young woman.

One summer we saw Detroit Cobras in Houston and then the next night in Austin. BEST of times for sure.
Also, Brode maam's music has been making me so much cooler for almost 20 years now. Id say it helped me to embrace my inner grit. Served me well. Still does. Not that anyone gives a shit, but I do. I give them shits lol
