Sister
The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sister Starla
My familiar
Sent from below
You shall serve me!
Wretched humans…
And their meddling!
This is our woods,
We shall crush them!
Wicked sisters of the wood
Laughing as we make our witches’ brew
Hidden under cloak and hood
We’ll destroy your farm, your crops and you!
Sister Starla
Loyal canine
Faithful servant
Sit by my side!
Wretched humans…
They’re all insects!
Crawling around
Waiting for death!
Wicked sisters of the wood
Laughing as we make our witches’ brew
Hidden under cloak and hood
We’ll destroy your farm, your crops and you!
Wicked sisters of the wood
Laughing as we make our witches’ brew

Hidden under cloak and hood
We’ll destroy your farm, your crops and you!

Overall Meaning

These lyrics depict a dark and sinister narrative, focusing on the relationship between an evil figure known as Sister Starla and the singer. Sister Starla is introduced as the singer's familiar, a spirit sent from below, presumably representing the devil or some malevolent force. The opening lines suggest that Sister Starla is bound to serve the singer and carry out their wicked intentions.

The song portrays a disdain for humanity, referring to them as wretched humans and accusing them of meddling in the affairs of Sister Starla and the singer. The line "This is our woods, we shall crush them!" suggests a possessive attitude toward their territory and a desire to assert dominance over humanity. It implies that the singer and Sister Starla see themselves as superior beings, destined to bring destruction upon those who cross their path.

The chorus highlights the malicious nature of the wicked sisters of the wood. They are seen as laughing while they brew a witches' potion as a symbol of their dark arts. The sisters operate in secrecy, hidden under cloaks and hoods, plotting to bring ruin not only to the farms and crops but also to the people themselves, emphasizing their vindictive and vengeful intentions.

In the second verse, Sister Starla is described as a loyal canine and a faithful servant to the singer. This imagery adds another layer to their dynamic, suggesting a strong bond and a sense of obedience. The disdain for humanity continues, with the singer referring to them as insects, crawling around and waiting for death. This imagery reinforces the idea that the wicked sisters view themselves as superior to humans and see their destruction as inevitable.

The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the sisters' malicious laughter, their hidden actions, and their determination to destroy not only the physical aspects of human existence, such as farms and crops, but also the humans themselves. Overall, these lyrics create a dark and foreboding atmosphere, portraying Sister Starla and the singer as powerful and malevolent entities set on wreaking havoc on humanity.

Fantastic side! The Bozzies really show what they are made of in this one! And Connie gets to solo for the first half of the record! No other sisters act could get as sultry and lowdown in their harmony in my book Nice to also discover another mellow vibe from Tommy Dorsey. Thanks for the update! !

Trombonology Erstwhile

The tempo changes and melodic and harmonic tinkerings that are present on most of the Bozzies' sides always have the effect of making me feel by the end of the record that I was taken someplace new in those roughly three minutes. Far from merely excellent singers, Martha, Connee and Vet were extraordinary innovators, whose ideas, though inspirational to later vocal groups, ultimately remained far more sophisticated and revolutionary. No one provided more sympathetic instrumental support than Tommy and Jimmy and the various sidemen they assembled: here we can appreciate the great Eddie Lang's impeccable accompaniment. Connee, both with her sisters and as a solo singer, is easily in my Top Three for female vocalists; Top Four for vocalists in general.

This is one of my favorite recordings of all time! Tommy Dorsey and the Boswell Sisters, all at their very best. Music does not get any better than this!

Finally a natural voice again.
The greatest jazz singer of all time and who the others imitated, Connie B and her 2 sisters.

Alonzo Church

I can’t think of anyone else in jazz who makes this tune a sultry number. Love how Tommy Dorsey makes use of his trombone to almost make himself a fourth sister.

Steven Smith

Heaven.
