1) The Divide - Davis, California.
With a sound reminiscent of early 90s bay area punk rock, The Divide has reaffirmed not only a punk rock spirit that has been lost over the past 10 years, but also a social awareness that is sorely lacking in popular music. With few exceptions, punk rock ethos has been sacrificed in order to appease current trends of popular culture. Against this backdrop, The Divide was created.
Blending influences like Operation Ivy, The Clash, Fifteen, Leftover Crack, and The Unseen, The Divide has created their own style of politically motivated punk rock. The result is a sound reminiscent of early 90s ska-punk, with enough leads and background vocals to keep anyone interested, from die-hard street punk fans to pop-punk aficionados.
The Divide formed out of a shared desperation and disgust, not only for the current music scene, but also the current state of American politics and foreign policy. The summer of 2006 proved to be a profound turning point. The band originally started as a continuation of lead singer Isaac “Eye Sac” Thornton’s previous band, All Dead, but quickly evolved into something entirely new. Twenty minutes of playing with drummer Jamie Prior (formerly of Fifteen, Madcap, The Mahi Mahis, and countless other bands) was all it took for both Thornton and Prior to realize their vision of a musically solid, politically and socially aware, punk rock band. The rhythm section came together in full force with Taylor Street (The Backups, Minus You, Some Assholes) whose shared musical vision and talent made him the essential choice for a bass player. With the addition of Santa Rosa native Derek Neilson supplying lead guitar and sharing vocals, the line-up was complete.
After touring extensively throughout California and Nevada in a mini-van, playing whenever and wherever they could, giving away hundreds of copies of their demo, even sending them, along with patches, stickers, and buttons to kids across the world for free, The Divide has just completed their self-titled 6-song EP in preparation for their upcoming US tour. Recorded by Eric Broyhill (7-seconds, Pressure Point, Deftones) at The Pus Cavern in Sacramento, the EP is an all-out assault on the current state of punk rock. With politically charged lyrics, relentless drumming, and awesome guitar parts, the only way to fully describe this EP is tough as nails.
The message is clear: music is power. It is not a means for prosperity and fame. The Divide realizes this message more now then ever. The lyrics pierce the hearts and minds of a sea of raised fists, echoing over the reverberation of the guitars and the bass, to the steady pulse of the drums:
“Divided we stand, divided we fall.”
2) The Divide - United Kingdom.
Daniel Furniss aka The Divide always was a dreamer. Born in Leeds in 1981 it was at the tender age of ten he first became interested in rhythm by meticulously dissecting his growing collection of acid house cassettes. Five years on and he finds his true calling in the middle of a damp and dark rave-floor at the UK’s infamous Helter Skelter Technodrome.
It was at this moment he knew he had to utilize his creative ideas and twist the techno genre to express his ever-growing myriad of hidden emotions. Born in what he sees as the dawn of a new technological age, Daniel began to take his vision of the future and express them sonically. With delusions of a cashless society, a dystopia, a broken world with an apocalyptic end he decided to grab the techno beast by the neck and use it to warn people of a new unfolding reality – one where the powers that control divide those underneath. We are told to switch off our brains, embrace distractions, switch on the TV, go consume, take the blue instead of the red pill, choose to ignore - to be controlled instead of be free. The Divide incorporates this message in his music in an attempt to change our very programming.
Ten years on and with releases on Construct Rhythm, Form, Jerk, Fine Audio, Betamax, Template and Blackout Audio Recordings, Daniel has taken his message across the globe. His tracks are hammered by innovative DJ’s such as Dave Clarke and Cari Lekebusch at events such as Awakenings, Oxygen Festival and I Love Techno. The response has been nothing short of incredible.
So where will the future take us? Daniel is currently pursuing a more purist sound. Having based his degree thesis on Algorithms and Aesthetics, Daniel believes in mathematical expression in music - maths is the vehicle and the soul is the hand of the programmer. One day, the machine will program itself, become self aware, the machines will speak. But until that moment, Daniel Furniss aka The Divide will be doing the speaking.
And I for one, will be doing the listening.
John Carter, X-Mag 2007.
3) The Divide - From Adelaide, Australia.
In the Adelaide Autumn of 2005 an outlet for creativity was born. Heartfelt lyrics penned down with refined sing-along melodies by singer/guitarist Jeremy Owen sparked to life the starting point for richly diverse melodic rock band, THE DIVIDE.
Closely knit, members include a husband, wife, brother and a friend, giving THE DIVIDE a unified drive and direction, both professionally and sonically. Having fulfilled their goal of recording a debut self-titled album in Adelaide's premier Mixmasters Studio, mastering in Studio 301's completed in mid 2006, THE DIVIDE is well on its way to achieving its musical aspirations.
4) The Dive - from Phoenix, Arizona.
The Divide was a 6 piece hardcore/metalcore from Arizona. The Divide was around for around the full year of 2002. They split after recording a 6 song EP with Jalipaz at Audio Confusion in Mesa entitled "Code From The Savior Machine". Their sound is very abrasive, but yet still very melodic.
5)The Divide, from Columbus, Ohio.

The Divide Lyrics

Giving me a glimpse of your life through a filter
Drinking champagne, alibis, middle fingers
I don't even wanna know
So I just leave it all alone
But how did it get this way between us
Maybe that's why I didn't wanna believe it
Hiding between the lines
It feels like we are lost again
So full of mixed emotions
When do we let this die
When did the spark leave both of our eyes
How did it get so messy, messy
I'm drinking without you, I'm thinking about you
And it all falls down before our eyes
Messy, Messy
Reckless behavior, I'm out of my league here
If this is heaven
I don't wanna know what hell is like
When did it start, and where does it end
Did we build castles just to play pretend?
You slept in my bed, you left me on read
Your love was so cold that I could see my own breath
I know I got issues, and you've got your games
I'm tryin' to track you down but I'm just running in place
Chasing something that can never be mine
I can't win when you're moving the finish line
It feels like we are lost again
So full of mixed emotions
When do we let this die
When did the spark leave both of our eyes
How did it get so messy, messy
I'm drinking without you, I'm thinking about you
And it all falls down before our eyes
Messy, messy
Reckless behavior, I'm out of my league here
If this is heaven
I don't wanna know what hell is like
If only I could turn back time
Go back to where it all began
Before everything we did turned into fighting
We used to tolerate it
We became what we hated
Ignoring all the signs
So we don't have to compromise
How did it get so messy
How did it get here
How did it get so messy, messy
Reckless behavior, I'm out of my league here
If this is heaven
I don't wanna know, what hell is like
What hell is like
(How did it get so messy, messy)
What hell is like
(I'm drinking without you, I'm thinking about you)
What hell is like
(How did it get so messy, messy)
I don't wanna know what hell is like
How did it get so messy?
The Divide's song "The Divide" delves into the complexities and struggles of a deteriorating relationship. The lyrics open with a sense of suspicion and unease as the singer feels like they are only getting a filtered glimpse of their partner's life, filled with champagne, alibis, and defiance. The singer is torn between wanting to ignore the signs of discord and facing the harsh truth that things between them are not as they seem. The realization that they are "lost again" amidst a whirlwind of mixed emotions sets the tone for the looming downfall of the relationship.
As the song progresses, the lyrics delve deeper into the messiness and confusion that has overtaken the once harmonious connection. The singer reflects on their own actions, feeling out of place and out of control in the face of their partner's reckless behavior. The imagery of drinking alone and thinking about the other person signifies a sense of longing and heartache amidst the chaos. The chorus repeats the word "messy," emphasizing the tangled web of emotions and actions that have led to this breaking point.
The middle section of the song explores the beginning and eventual deterioration of the relationship. The imagery of building castles to play pretend and feeling the coldness of a partner's love highlights the disillusionment and heartbreak that have crept in. The singer acknowledges their own flaws and insecurities, feeling like they are constantly chasing an unattainable goal while their partner keeps shifting the boundaries.
Towards the end of the song, there is a sense of regret and longing for a time when things were simpler, before the conflicts and fighting took over. The desire to go back in time and undo the damage speaks to the deep sense of loss and yearning for what once was. The repeated questioning of "How did it get so messy?" reflects a sense of disbelief and confusion at the state of the relationship, with the singer grappling with the reality of their situation.
Overall, "The Divide" by The Divide captures the emotional turmoil and complexity of a crumbling relationship, painting a vivid picture of longing, regret, and the messy aftermath of love gone awry. The lyrics prompt introspection on the dynamics of relationships, the impact of communication breakdowns, and the struggle to find clarity amidst the chaos of conflicting emotions.

@Ettridge
I'm watching this as research for your upcoming ride that you've talked about while here with our gang in Florida, Ryan. Of course, I'll rewatch all of your own videos again just before the June race.
@g2g2010
This man is the real deal. Pushed beyond his limits and prevailed. Quote I will never forget. “Every time you push past something you thought you couldn’t, that’s the gift.”
This film was a gift to all of us. Thank you for sharing your adventure. Bravo Lachlan
@VeloObscura
I love how even in the worst of times, Lachy still manages to have a chuckle to himself. I think that says a lot more than most people realize.
@VincentChee001
The videographer counted the timing so well in so many shots is really crazy, this made this film look like a movie, and they don't get to retake it!
Lachlan has proven the importance of sleep in ultra racing, it affects the mental capability to handle stress, imagine if he's suffering from sleep fatigue while handling those crises (lightning on the mountain, coldness, and mechanical issues).
All in all, I can't neglect the point that made this film great is the fact that the director and editor himself is the brother of Lachlan and a cyclist too! He understands the stake and the rider very well, which aids the storytelling.
Thank you to all who were involved.
@keepingtherubberdown5715
The videographer was his brother Angus and his team. Also, video'd Lael on her attempt in 2019 and her AZT Ride.
@ultrarunner-ot6nd
Not only is lachy a fantastic cyclist, and ambassador for the sport he is a genuinely nice guy who always takes time to speak to those who turn out to cheer him on, on his alternative adventures. Quality.
