Devil In His Heart
The Donays Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(He's got the devil in his heart)
But his eyes they tantalize
(He's going to tear your heart apart)
Oh, his lips, they really thrill me

I'll take my chances
For romance is
So important to me
He'll never hurt me
He won't desert me
This, someday, you'll see

(He's got the devil in his heart)
No, no, this I won't believe
(He's gonna tear your heart apart)
No, not me will he deceive

I can't believe that he'll ever, ever go
Not when he holds me and says he loves me so
He'll never hurt me
He won't desert me
He's an angel sent to me

(He's got the devil in his heart)
Not his eyes, they tell no lies
(He's gonna tear your heart apart)
Oh, his lips, they really thrill me

(No, don't take chances
If your romance is
So important to you)
He'll never hurt me
He won't desert me
This, someday, you'll see

(He's got the devil in his heart)
No, no, no, no-no, this I won't believe
(He's gonna tear your heart apart)
Mmm-mm-mm, no, not me will he deceive

(He's got the devil in his heart)
No, he's an angel sent to me
(He's got the devil in his heart)
No, he's an angel sent to me

(He's got the devil in his heart)

Overall Meaning

The Donays's song "Devil In His Heart" is a love song that speaks to the fear and hope one feels when falling in love with someone who may have a dark or dangerous side. The lyrics focus on the singer's attraction to a man who has "the devil in his heart" and the conflicting emotions this creates. While his eyes and lips tantalize and thrill her, she is also afraid that he will "tear her heart apart" and deceive her. Despite this fear, she cannot resist the romantic temptation and takes her chances with him. The singer believes that he is an angel sent to her, despite the warning signs that he may be trouble.

The song captures the common experience of falling in love with someone who has a reputation for being a heartbreaker or troublemaker. The lyrics suggest that the singer is aware of the risk involved but chooses to take the chance anyway, possibly because she cannot resist the allure of his danger. The repetition of the phrase "he'll never hurt me, he won't desert me" suggests that the singer is trying to reassure herself that she has made the right choice in pursuing this man.

Overall, "Devil In His Heart" is a catchy and upbeat song that explores the complexities of love and attraction. It speaks to the universal experience of falling for someone who may not be good for us and the hope and fear that can come with that experience.

She's got the devil in her heart
But her eyes they tantalize
She's gonna tear your heart apart
Oh, her lips they really thrill me
I'll take my chances
For romance is
So important to me
She'll never hurt me
She won't desert me
She's an angel sent to me
She's got the devil in her heart
No, no, this I can't believe
She's gonna tear your heart apart
No, no, nay, will she deceive
I can't believe that she'll ever ever go
Not when she hugs me and says she loves me so
She'll never hurt me
She won't desert me
Listen, can't you see
She's got the devil in her heart
Oh, no, no, no, this I can't believe
She's gonna tear your heart apart
No, no, nay, will she deceive
Don't take chances if your romance is
So important to you
She'll never hurt me

+Michelle Dishaw When I listened to the Beatles' version as a kid in 1964, I would look at the disc for the composer's name and see "Drapkin" and wonder who he was because I liked this song so much. (Embarrassing question but bear with me: Is/was Rick Drapkin black or white?)

Probably white.

As great as the Beatles are, it's a big thrill to hear what they were listening to in their formative years.

The Beatles really loved to cover the girl groups. Shirelles, Cookies, Marvelettes and The Donays.

@brendawaltrick2339

I agree about this fact #equalrights

@freeguy77

And they did a fantastic job in covering those great songs with their own unique sound. This is the first time I have heard of The Donays or this original. "Chains" by The Cookies, "Please Mr. Postman" by The Marvelettes, "Baby It's You" by The Shirelles, "Money (That's What I Want)" by Barrett Strong (1959), and this song! The Beatles did them all, and each one was a new experience in how they arranged and sounded on them. You'll notice these groups were all in the United States, not one was from England. They knew that the inspirations and R&B or Rock music and bands (or individuals) they wanted to sing covers on were all in the U.S.
And don't forget Chuck Berry's, "Rock and Roll Music" that Paul covered! John said about Chuck, "If you were to give Rock 'n' Roll another name, you might want to call it Chuck Berry." The ultimate compliment to one of The Beatles deepest inspirations in forming their band and singing! They also have credited inspirations from Buddy Holly, Elvis, Little Richard (Paul's fav), and for their exquisite harmonies, The Everly Brothers.
