Here to Love You
The Doobie Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've heard it said that the weight of the world's problems
Is enough to make the ball fall right through space
That it ain't even worth it to live
With all that's goin' wrong

Well, let me just go down as saying
That I'm glad to be here
Here with all the same pain
And laughs everybody knows

Some men think they're born to be king
Maybe that's true
But I think passing love around
Is all we were born to do

Let them build their kingdoms
Let them make the laws for this world to heed
'Cause you and I make life worth living
Right here in each other's arms

I'm here to love you, baby
No more loneliness, yeah
No more emptiness, oh
I'm here to love you, yeah, yeah

Let them build their kingdoms
Let them make the laws for this world to heed
'Cause you and I make life worth living
Right here in each other's arms

I'm here to love you, baby
No more loneliness, yeah
No more emptiness, oh
I'm here to love you
I'm here to love you

Just let me go on loving you
Don't stop me now while I'm feeling this way
Just let me go on loving you
Don't stop me now while I'm feeling this way

Just let me go on loving you
Don't stop me now while I'm feeling this way
Just let me go on loving you
Don't stop me now while I'm feeling this way

Just let me go on loving you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Doobie Brothers' song Here To Love You are a message of hope and positivity for anyone who feels overwhelmed by the problems of the world. The opening lines suggest that it would be easy to give up, to accept defeat and succumb to despair. However, the singer disagrees with this sentiment and asserts that he is "glad to be here," with all of the pain and joy that life brings. He recognizes that life can be tough, but he believes that the beauty of existence lies in the connections we make with one another, and in the amount of love we give and receive.

The next verse emphasizes his point further. While some people may believe that they are destined for greatness, the singer believes that their real purpose is to "pass love around." He encourages us to ignore those who seek power or status, and to focus on the love we give and receive from those around us. The final verses echo this sentiment, repeating the chorus with increasing urgency. The singer declares his commitment to always love the person he is singing to, and he implores them not to stop him from feeling this way.

Overall, the message of the song is clear: life may be difficult at times, but the love we give and receive is what makes it worth living. It is a powerful and poetic reminder to appreciate the important things in life, and to cherish the people we love.

I ran this album into the GROUND in 1978. I'm talking about playing it every single day, like a girl obsessed! When I was 10 years old, I started singing and traveling with a gospel community choir in the northeast Bronx. The only reason I stopped with them is that I went away to Binghamton to college in September 1978. I knew every word of every song on this album. Believe me, this one of the soundtracks of my LIFE! And listening to it in 2020 shows us all how timeless their music is! And Michael McDonald had then - and still has - one of the most naturally soulful and passionate voices ever blessed to sing!

Ditto from a white boy in the ozarks. Played it everyday. Doing it now again!
