50 in a 25 Zone
The Dream Syndicate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Big Jake and slow talking Benny
took a night off from the kill
went down to the copper penny
and split without paying the bill
well... I asked the night manager
if he thought that was cool
he said no
Jake and Benny took off from the jungle
with a case of colt 45
somewhere down the line the plans got bungled
that's the last time they were seen alive
well... you get lucky once, you get lucky twice
and you're on your own
doing 50 in a 25, 50 in a 25, 50 in a 25 zone

Yeah, some people keep their hands in other people's pockets
and everybody else is on the take
man, I'd be last one around to knock it
it's just that I'm holding out for higher stakes
Well... you get lucky once, get lucky twice
and you're on your own
doing 50 in a 25, 50 in a 25, 50 in a 25 zone

Another case of early retirement
another easy alibi
they're all lined up on the pavement
and justice comes down by and by

Overall Meaning

The Dream Syndicate's "50 in a 25 Zone" tells a story of two men, Big Jake and slow talking Benny, who took a night off from their illegal activities to have a drink at the Copper Penny, but ended up skipping out on paying the bill. The singer questions the night manager about the incident and he replies that he did not think it was cool. Later, the song suggests that Jake and Benny were involved in a crime that went wrong, and they were never seen alive again. The lyrics suggest that those who take risks often end up regretting their actions, and that justice comes down eventually.

The song seems to be about the consequences of living life on the edge, and how sometimes taking risks can have deadly consequences. The singer seems to be a bystander who is observing the events and offering commentary. The lyrics are vivid and paint a picture of a seedy world where people are always looking for a way to get ahead. The driving beat of the music adds to the feeling of tension and danger that pervades the song.

Overall, "50 in a 25 Zone" is a cautionary tale about living life recklessly and the consequences that can follow. It speaks to the dark side of human nature and how greed and ambition can lead people down a dangerous path.

The best album of this good band. In Europe we called them "Urban cow-Boys" with The Del Fuegos, Concrete Blonde, etc. In the middle of 80's theses bands were a hope against stupid pop singers.

I'm not sure if you are simply a fan of Dream Syndicate, or you are subtly promoting a song about dangerous driving that might result in a personal injury.... Nevertheless, thanks for posting!
