I've Got Sand In My Shoes
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, the boardwalk's deserted
There's nobody down by the shore
And the Ferris wheel ride isn't turning around anymore
The heat wave and the crowds are just old news
But I've still got some sand in my shoes
(Sand in my shoes)
Brings mem'ries of the salty air
(Sand in my shoes)
Whoa the blanket that we used to share
How we fell in love down by the sea
Comes back to me (back to me, back to me) with the sand in my shoes
Whoa, oh
When the water was cold
You would tremble and hold me so tight
And we'd sit on the beach just to wait for the stars to come out at night
The heat wave and the crowds are just old news
But I've still got some sand in my shoes
(Sand in my shoes)
Oh, brings mem'ries of the salty air
(Sand in my shoes)
Whoa the blanket that we used to share
How we fell in love down by the sea
Comes back to me (back to me, back to me) with the sand in my shoes
(Sand in my shoes)
Whoa
(Sand in my shoes)
Whoa, la, la, la, la, uh-whoa
(Sand in my shoes)

Whoa-uh-oh-oh

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' song "I've Got Sand in My Shoes" depicts a nostalgic feeling of the past, specifically of a lovers' beach trip. The boardwalk is empty and the Ferris wheel is not turning anymore which suggests that the tourist season has ended, and they are the only ones who remain on the beach. The heat wave and crowds are just old news, but the singer still has sand in their shoes. The sand is a metaphor for the memories of the time they spent together. The sand brings back memories of their shared blanket, the salty air, and how they fell in love down by the sea. The song captures how the smallest things can hold deep meaning and shape a person's mood and emotions, especially when the memories are tied to moments of love and connection.

I love how this song forms a sort of "trilogy" with "Up On the Roof" and "Under the Boardwalk". "Under the Boardwalk" quotes the title of the first song ("When the sun bets down and burns the tar up on the roof"), then "I've Got Sand in my Shoes" begins, "Oh the boardwalk's deserted..." and even quotes the phrase "down by the sea" from "Under the Boardwalk."
