I Don't Want to Go on Without You
The Drifters Lyrics

I don't want to
Go on without you
It's so bad to be alone
Oh baby come home
I need you (yes I do now)
My room is so blue
I keep seein' your face
Oh, every place
Here in the gloom
Of my lonely room
I hold her handkerchief
And smell her sweet perfume
Oh, oh, oh I can't stand to (no, no, no)
Live on without you
Oh my darlin' hear my plea
C'mon back to me
Here in the gloom
Of my lonely room
I hold her handkerchief
And smell her sweet perfume
Oh, I can't stand to
Live on without you
Oh my darlin' hear my plea
C'mon back to me (I don't want to go on without you)

I don't want to, I don't wanna baby (I don't want to go on without you)
Sure I don't wanna, I don't wanna

Overall Meaning

The Drifters recorded "I Don't Want to Go on Without You" in 1961. This song expresses the devastation of heartbreak and the desperation of wanting someone back in your life. The lyrics emphasize how hard it is to cope with a breakup and how painful it is to move on when you still have feelings for someone. The singer doesn't want to carry on with life without his significant other because it feels terrible to be alone.

In the song's opening lines, "I don't want to go on without you, it's so bad to be alone," the singer conveys just how difficult it is to handle the aftermath of a breakup. The desperation in his voice when he appeals to his lover to hear his plea and come back to him is quite evident. The lyric "My room is so blue, I keep seein' your face / Oh, every place, here in the gloom," shows how the memories of his ex-lover are haunting him, and there's no escaping the sense of longing and sadness that he feels.

R I P to the great Charlie Thomas who died today January 31, 2023. This is a fabulous song which was to be recorded with Rudy Lewis doing the lead vocal. But the day before the recording Lewis died from an overdose and Bert Berns had to convince Charlie to sing the lead as broken up as he was he turns in a masterful vocal. I saw Thomas about 15 years ago just down the street from where i live at a high school performing with his Drifters. (there's been so many) and he still had his vocal chops. Rest well Mr. Thomas.

SHA LA LA LA LA, BABY IT'S YOU CLARE ONIONS

So sorry to hear that Billy. R.I.P Charlie Thomas. The Drifters are my favourite male band of all time. You were lucky to see Charlie perform. Hope you're okay.
