The band’s first release was a four song EP entitled SIX HOLLOW PERFECT THINGS. Included were the songs “Six Feet Under,” “Hollow,” “Perfect (Dream)” and “Common Things.”
The debut full length HOLLOW was released in June 2002 on the Morphenic Release imprint. Live ventures followed and included performances alongside scene favorites like The Mission (UK), The Cruxshadows, Voltaire, Gene Loves Jezebel, Stromkern and Assemblage 23. Many of the songs on HOLLOW still receive generous club and gothic radio play, while the title track was included on both the M&A MusicArt compilation “Angel Child VI: The Need for Silence” and the Cop International issued “Dark Awakening: Volume 4.”
A three-song EP titled NEW DISEASE followed. The EP once again showcased The Drowning Season’s unique brand of guitar influenced gothic rock forged on their earlier releases. The band quickly returned to live activity. The Last Dance, Bella Morte, Ego Likeness and The Start were among the high profile acts with whom they would share the stage during this series of shows.
February 2009 saw the release of the long anticipated second full length album, CURSE. The Drowning Season opened for The Azoic at Dracula's Ball in Philadelphia (one of the largest dark music events in the United States), and the band traveled to Chicago to perform at a Wax Trax II Records showcase. Their dance floor favorite "Angel of the Odd" was included on the "WTII Sunday Showcases 4 Year Anniversary Sampler."
The Drowning Season is currently writing and recording songs for their next album, DRUM MACHINES AND AMPHETAMINES.
Over the years, gothic rock had many voices and as many faces. And while electronic dance music continues to flourish in the dark music scene, one band defies the status quo to produce dark original guitar-oriented music that harkens back to the days of pointy boots and clove cigarettes. We are The Drowning Season.
Resurrection
The Drowning Season Lyrics

A ghost that won’t forget
Past obsessions
The fruit of my regret
Haunting appearance
Your memory burns new
My soul afire
In the flames I dance with you
I won’t raise the dead for you
I don’t think so
I won’t tear my world apart
Just to make you happy
I won’t raise the dead for you
I don’t think so
I won’t start what you will end
Just to make you feel again
Part of the scenery
You made me feel so small
In your world of you
You rarely had it all
But do you remember
Ever feeling you were sure
When you said forever
As you wandered out the door
The song Resurrection by The Drowning Season is a powerful and emotive piece that delves deep into past regret and the inability to move on from someone who has left the singer feeling small and insignificant. The first verse speaks of a “ghost that won’t forget” which suggests that the memory of someone, perhaps an ex-lover, continues to haunt the singer. This is reinforced by the line “haunting appearance” which indicates that whatever this person did to the singer was impactful enough to leave a lasting impression. Furthermore, it appears that the singer is willing to entertain the idea of reigniting the romantic relationship with the person by stating that “in the flames I dance with you”. However, the chorus makes it clear that there are boundaries that the singer is unwilling to cross in order to make the relationship work. The singer states that they will not “raise the dead” or “tear my world apart” for this person which suggests that they are placing their own well-being and mental health above any potential outcome that the relationship may yield.
The second verse continues to delve into the emotional turmoil that the singer is experiencing. They describe feeling “small” and insignificant in the eyes of the person who left them. Furthermore, it appears that the person rarely had everything they wanted and yet they still felt entitled enough to make the singer feel small. The singer reflects on a time where the person promised them “forever” but then “wandered out the door”. This line is particularly poignant as it speaks to a common theme of breakups where one person makes grand promises and then ultimately fails to keep them. The overall message of the song is that even though the singer is still struggling to come to terms with the end of the relationship, they are not willing to compromise their own wellbeing for the sake of the other person's happiness.
