Critics have likened their musical style to Modest Mouse, although band members cite their influences as The Flaming Lips, Joel Plaskett, and Weezer. (which are probably more accurate comparisons)
The Dudes gained popularity in Calgary both for their lo-fi approach to recording and releasing albums and for their live stage-show. On their album, Brain Heart Guitar, they worked with Calgary producer Russ Broom, and released the album in 2006 on the LoadMusic record label.
Their music has been played on university radio and CBC Radio 3, and the group has played at South by Southwest and Canadian Music Week.
Their song "Dropkick Queen of the Weekend" was heard across Canada in 2006, having been featured in a Rogers Wireless advertising campaign.
On January 12, 2007 they released a new single from Brain Heart Guitar, "Do the Right Thing". Its video was filmed at Webber Academy, a private school in Calgary, in the summer of 2006.

Yeah, I've been making lots of bank
But, can we all agree
The next fight's gonna be tough for me
Hey, that's an understatement
I'm the real tough guy
You're just playing
I think we can all agree
Oh-oh-oh, I've gotta train my best (Gotta train my best)
Oh-oh-oh, it's gonna put me to the test (It's gonna put me to the test)
Oh, There's nothing in my way
Oh, this is gonna be my day
But, the last thing I gotta do
I gotta survive the fight tonight
I've trained the hardest, done the time
I'm not sitting around sipping Sprite and lime
Unless you're blind
Then you should see
This fight's obviously gonna go to me
Quit talking like that
You're jinxing yourself
We both could use a little help
No one's perfect
But you can see
If I try hard you can't beat me
Oh-oh-oh, I've gotta train my best (Gotta train my best)
Oh-oh-oh, it's gonna put me to the test (It's gonna put me to the test)
Training, sweating, dying, thriving
Training, sweating, dying, thriving
Oh-oh-oh, I've gotta train my best (Gotta train my best)
Oh-oh-oh, it's gonna put me to the test (It's gonna put me to the test)
Oh-oh-oh, I've gotta train my best (Gotta train my best)
Oh-oh-oh, it's gonna put me to the test (It's gonna put me to the test)
Oh, There's nothing in my way
Oh, this is gonna be my day
But, the last thing I gotta do
I gotta survive the fight tonight
Gotta survive the fight tonight
Gotta survive the fight tonight
The Dudes’ song ‘The Fight’ depicts the lead singer’s determination to win his upcoming fight. He boasts about his progress, stating that he has been “rising the ranks” and “making lots of bank.” However, he acknowledges that the next fight will be tough for him, and he needs to train his best to pass this test. He exudes confidence throughout the song, stating that no one can beat him if he tries hard enough and that there is nothing in his way.
However, there is a conflicting opinion presented in the song. The lead singer’s opponent warns him about being too overconfident and jinxing himself. This external voice suggests that both of them could use a little help, and no one is perfect, indicating the lead singer’s opponent is self-aware and understands that he is no pushover.
Overall, the song is about confidence, determination, and the will to win, set to a catchy, upbeat melody.
