For A While
The Duke Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He's home for a little while
He's mine once again
No need to tell, but it feels simply swell
With him close to me
Where he's supposed to be
He's home for a little while
I lived for his kiss; I hit the skies
When he looks in my eyes
And my knees grow weak with bliss
He's sort of changed
He's kind of different
From the boy I used to know a while ago
Strange how much he says without a word
And when he holds my hand I understand
I'm his, but for ever more
He's mine, mine alone
We'll have to part

But he's close to my heart
For the little while he's home

Overall Meaning

The Duke's song For a While expresses the emotions of a woman who is reunited with her love after a period of separation. The lyrics suggest that she has been waiting for his return and is now overjoyed to have him close by her. The opening line of the song, "He's home for a little while," sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The woman is describing the temporary nature of their reunion and is determined to make the most of the time they have together.

The lyrics go on to describe the intensity of the woman's emotions when she is with her love. Her knees grow weak with bliss when he looks into her eyes, and she feels complete when she is close to him. Despite feeling overjoyed at their reunion, the woman acknowledges that her lover has changed since they were last together. However, this change does not detract from her love for him. In fact, the song suggests that their reunion has brought them closer together, and she feels more connected to him than ever before.

Overall, The Duke's song For a While is a beautiful expression of the intense emotions experienced by a woman in love with her partner. The temporary nature of their reunion only serves to heighten her emotions and make her love for him even stronger.

Very intriguing story, didn't want it to end. The narrator did a very good job as well.

Can't get past the housekeeper assuming a young woman in an old gown with a hem four-times let down and a shop-girl pinafore is the fiancé of a duke. I'll give it just a bit longer, but not a promising start. Also can't really see the heroine risking her life for a person she has only exchanged words with like "would you like the green ribbon or the blue, here's your change," and who doesn't even know her name. Sad.

This is one of the worst narrators I’ve ever heard. Every sentence has exactly the same inflection, regardless of the content. It’s like she has no idea what she’s reading. I’m just powering through at this point because I want to know how it ends.

I had wondered if the movie plot had been based on this book . Wonder if the book was written before the movie came out. It is a great little series of books and I have read the hard copies of a couple of them not originally realising they belonged in a series
