Some Of Shelley's Blues
The Earl Scruggs Revue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me,
Just one more time the reasons why you must leave,
Tell me once more why you're sure you don't need me,
Tell me again but, don't think that you'll convince me.

Now you've said,
Before falling in love again you'd rather be dead,
'Cause when someone breaks your heart, you cry your eyes red,
But there's nothing so hard about the life that you've led.

As far as I can see,
There's no reason for goodbyes,
You're just running scared,
And that's something I won't buy.

So you lose,
I won't let you go with nothing to show but more blues,
And all this talk about leaving is strictly bad news,
So you settle down and stay with the man that loves you.

As far as I can see,
There's no reason for goodbyes,
You're just running scared,
And that's something I won't buy.

So you lose,
I won't let you go with nothing to show but more blues,
And all this talk about leaving is strictly bad news,

So you settle down and stay with the man that loves you,
You settle down and stay with the man that loves you.

Overall Meaning

The Earl Scruggs Revue's "Some Of Shelley's Blues" is a song about a man (presumably the vocalist) trying to convince his lover not to leave him. Through the lyrics, the man tries to convince her that there is no reason for goodbyes and that she is just running scared. He questions why she must leave and asks her to tell him once more the reasons why she believes she does not need him. However, he confesses that despite her explanation, he will not be convinced to let her go.

The chorus reinforces the man's disbelief that his lover must leave him. He tells her that he won't let her go with nothing to show but more blues, implying that leaving him will only lead to her being more unhappy. He also calls her talk of leaving strictly bad news and urges her to stay with him, settle down, and be with the man that loves her. The lyrics suggest that the man believes his lover's desire to leave is not based on a valid reason, but rather on her fear of love.

This is an awesome cover by Earl and the boys! Bought this album for a buck at a second hand store strictly by seeing this song on it of course I had already been a fan of Earl and Scruggs for along time but this lp with him and his sons is a kicker! Love it plus I would rate the rest of the songs a clean 10!! Long live The Nez AND Mr Earl Scruggs!

Now that Michael Nesmith has joined Earl on the other side, they can play this song together as much as they'd like. This was my introduction to this wonderful song and I've always loved it.

@mickeycrist

Earl his two boys, Randy and Gary (singing lead vocal) and Vassar Clements on fiddle and I believe a kid named Jodie Maphis on drums...

@bconigliaro

Sorry if this is persnickety, Mickey Crist (you obviously have great taste), but Maphis spelled his name Jody. Son of super country picker Joe Maphis & his wife Rose Lee. Vassar was gone by this LP. Josh Graves was still on dobro. Randy, a guitar prodigy, picks the lead. Although he didn't play on it, Steve Scruggs (piano) is also on the LP cover. He joined the band after the LP was cut. One of the greatest bands. Cover: Earl in the middle, clockwise from top right: Josh, Randy, Gary (laying down), Jody, Stevie in upper left.
