Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's mighty dark for me to travel
For my sweetheart, she is gone
Road is rough and filled with gravel
But I must journey on and on

To me she was a little angel
Sent down to me from God above
As on the day that I first met her
That I told her of my love

It's mighty dark for me to travel
For my sweetheart, she is gone
Road is rough and filled with gravel
But I must journey on and on

Many a night we strolled together
Talking of our love so fair
My love for her will never vanish
For I know I'll meet her there

It's mighty dark for me to travel
For my sweetheart, she is gone
Road is rough and filled with gravel
But I must journey on and on

Traveling down this lonesome highway
Thinking of my love who's gone
Knowing soon we'll be together
She's the only love I've known

It's mighty dark for me to travel
For my sweetheart, she is gone
Road is rough and filled with gravel
But I must journey on and on

It's mighty dark for me to travel
For my sweetheart, she is gone

Road is rough and filled with gravel
But I must journey on and on

Overall Meaning

In this song, Bill Monroe is singing about the hardship of traveling without his sweetheart. He describes the darkness of his journey and the roughness of the road, but he insists on pressing on despite the obstacles. He spends much of the song reminiscing about their time together, describing her as a little angel sent from God. Monroe talks about the many nights they spent together walking and talking about their love. Despite her absence, his love for her remains and he is comforted by the thought that they will one day be reunited.

Overall, this song is a poignant expression of heartbreak and longing. It showcases Monroe's ability to convey deep emotion through his music and lyrics. The use of descriptive imagery such as the "rough and gravelly road" and the "lonesome highway" adds to the sense of loneliness and isolation that he is feeling. The song's simple structure and repetitive melody reinforce the feeling of being stuck in a difficult situation with no clear end in sight.

The bass player is my grandfathers dad Howard watts

@iragitlin7549

The bass player in this video is actually Bill's son, James Monroe. But Howard Watts was one of the greats! He was with Monroe from '46 to '48. Did you ever get to meet him?

@thecrazybluejosh

@@iragitlin7549 Sadly, no but his son (my Grandfather) still admires him to this day and tells us stories about him and Hank Williams all the time.
