Agony
The Effection Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Did you ever wonder why
When the whole world is sleeping, you're awake?
And you're lying there in the harshness of silence all alone
Did you ever wonder why
When the whole world is calling, you're not there?
You're off into a momentary lapse of life, and they all go on living, but you just stare
Maybe life is just a novel novelty, I just can't say
Maybe ignorance is bliss, and we're all better off this way
Or maybe there's a sublime subtext, hidden history
That I just can't see in a life of agony
Did you ever wonder why
When the universe haunts you like a ghost
In your head a hundred million voices blare?
They're talking about nothing much at all
And when the sky glows gold in summer afternoons, that hint of haze
And gold has been the reason that so many wars are waged
The irony, it burns me like the sunlight on my face
I just can't say in this life of agony
Whatever happened to the satellite we knew
That spins around a flame, a star that has no name?
Well, they demanded we learn that with desire we burn
Then promise us eternal flame, but did you ever wonder why
Mother Mary, matriarch, pleads with her children "do no cry"
While the figureheads of state create the reasons young men die?
If I have to leave this place, please understand why I can't stay

Because I have to get away from this life of agony
This life is agony

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Effection’s song Agony are meant to evoke feelings of despair and questioning within the listener. The opening lines ask a question that many of us have likely considered: why do we sometimes feel like we’re the only ones awake in a sleeping world? The tone of the lyrics is melancholy and introspective, with a sense of loneliness and isolation present throughout.

The second verse continues to explore the theme of feeling disconnected from the world around us. We’re confronted with the idea that maybe we’re better off not knowing everything, and that life is best lived in ignorant bliss. However, the lyrics also suggest that there may be something deeper going on beneath the surface that we simply can’t see.

The chorus repeats the title of the song, emphasizing the idea that life can sometimes feel like an endless cycle of agony. The song touches on a variety of themes, including war, religion, and the search for meaning, while providing no clear answers. Instead, the lyrics leave the listener to grapple with these complex issues on their own.

This life is agony
This life is torture.

The Effection was a power-pop trio from Oakland, California comprised of former members of such Bay Area acts as LIMP and DANCE HALL CRASHERS and Providence, Rhode Islands' pop-punk outfit, WATERDOG. THE EFFECTION (Billy, Scott and Chris) have produced a gem of a pop album. Sountrack To A Moment, their debut on Adeline Records, has its punk/indie roots firmly planted in the melodic songwriting tradition of groups like THE JAM, ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS, and THE FIGGS
