It Was Love
The Elected Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
From the one you say that you love
Now you cry out your eyes day and night
You set free the one that you love
And it's true, I don't remember you
But I believe you if you say that we met
I get confused
I thought I was already dead
But man, I loved
Yeah, I loved
When I loved
It was love
It was love
Or at least, the closest I got
And the coffee, the cream
The blood in my dreams
Are the ones you used to know
And the gas, the plane, the interstate
Live the ones you don't have to know
And I regret this sad and awful truth
But my mouth, it'll get away from me
You, I just put up with you, kid
I stayed cause you wouldn't leave
Remember love
Oh, love
When we loved
It was love
It was love
Or at least, as close as I've come
And maybe joan was running all alone
And there is a shortcut
By putting a gun to your brain
Man, to take all that you got
And the truth was I was just scared for you
But for me, that's the way that it comes
You'd gotten used to me and my awful tongue
But god, didn't we have some fun?
When we made love in the van
And I drove with your hand on my lap
And when San Diego got too unkind
We just picked up and left it behind
And we had some love and some hope
A full tank of gas and a wide open road
It was love
To us, it was all that we had
And there's just a day when you just break
The best thing you had
And I still call it love
For now, it's the closest I've come
The Elected's "It Was Love" is a nostalgic love song that speaks about lost love and emotional pain. The song starts off by mentioning how the person the singer loved had found a way to break from the relationship they shared, leaving the singer confused and heartbroken. They spent nights wondering how it all led to this, and how they ended up feeling dead inside. But despite the pain, the singer remembers the feeling of love, and how it was the closest they had ever come to it.
The second verse takes the audience through a reminiscence of the moments they shared with the person they loved, such as drinking coffee with cream and taking gas and planes on the road. The lines "I regret this sad and awful truth, But my mouth, it'll get away from me, You, I just put up with you, kid, I stayed cause you wouldn't leave" suggest the singer stayed in the relationship out of obligation or a sense of responsibility, even though they were not fully invested in it. However, the references to "making love in a van" and "driving with your hand on my lap" hint at the times when the relationship worked and when they felt truly in love.
The chorus emphasizes that what they had together was love, at least the closest they had come to it. The lyrics also suggest the idea that sometimes one loses the best thing they ever had without fully grasping what it was. The song ends on a poignant and sad note, with the singer acknowledging that they still call it love, even though it's the closest they've come to it for now.

You found a way to break away
You managed to escape from the person you claim to love
From the one you say that you love
From the person you claim to love
Now you cry out your eyes day and night
You weep constantly, day and night
You set free the one that you love
You let go of the person you love
And it's true, I don't remember you
I can't recall who you are
But I believe you if you say that we met
If you say we met, I'll trust you
I get confused
I'm unsure
Nights, I've been wondering
I think about this in the middle of the night
I thought I was already dead
I felt like I was lifeless
But man, I loved
But I loved passionately
Yeah, I loved
Yes, I loved dearly
When I loved
When I was in love
It was love
It was a true love
It was love
It was a genuine love
Or at least, the closest I got
Or maybe the most authentic love I've experienced
And the coffee, the cream
Coffee and cream
The blood in my dreams
The blood I dream about
Are the ones you used to know
Are the things you were familiar with
And the gas, the plane, the interstate
Fuel, airplane, highway
Live the ones you don't have to know
Are the things you don't need to be aware of
And I regret this sad and awful truth
I feel bad about this unpleasant reality
But my mouth, it'll get away from me
Sometimes I speak without thinking
You, I just put up with you, kid
I just tolerate you, youngster
I stayed cause you wouldn't leave
I remained because you didn't want to go
Remember love
Remember the love we had
Oh, love
Oh, the love we had
When we loved
When we were in love
It was love
It was a genuine love
It was love
It was a true love
Or at least, as close as I've come
Or maybe it was the closest I've ever been to real love
And maybe joan was running all alone
Joan might have been running solo
And there is a shortcut
And there is a quick way out
By putting a gun to your brain
By shooting yourself in the head
Man, to take all that you got
To take everything from you
And the truth was I was just scared for you
The truth was, I was scared for your safety
But for me, that's the way that it comes
But that's how I feel about it
You'd gotten used to me and my awful tongue
You had become accustomed to my unkind words
But god, didn't we have some fun?
But didn't we also have some great times?
When we made love in the van
When we had sex in the van
And I drove with your hand on my lap
And you placed your hand on my thigh as I drove
And when San Diego got too unkind
And when San Diego became too harsh
We just picked up and left it behind
We decided to leave it all behind
And we had some love and some hope
And we had some love and some optimism
A full tank of gas and a wide open road
A full tank of gas and a road with no destination
It was love
It was a genuine love
To us, it was all that we had
To us, it was everything we had
And there's just a day when you just break
And there's a day when everything just shatters
The best thing you had
The best thing you ever had
And I still call it love
And I still consider it love
For now, it's the closest I've come
For the time being, it's the most authentic love I've experienced

Loved the ending of HIMYM no matter what other people say ... life really turns in weird and unexpected ways

U only get the ending when u have a Robin
Junaid Iftikhar
It was the only way Robin and Ted, who were destined to be together, could be together and happy. It was so close to reality that it was brutal.

I got mad at first too but if you keep rewatching you will get new perspectives and for me I am still waiting for mine cause I know the man she's with their relationship won't last and maybe that's horrible to expect but I kinda believe our paths will cross somehow maybe tomorrow or 10 years later thus the ending makes a lot of sense
Steven McDonald
I realise I'm in the minority but it's imperfect but brilliant ending, so real. Both Ted and Tracy were the right people for each other when they were together, they loved each other completely. Ted loved robin a d Tracy loved her first partner who passed. The ending also shares similarities with Ted's favourite book : love in the time of cholera. Helps the ending a little in my opinion 🙂. Still my favourite show
