Formed in 1961, The Essex eventually included Anita Humes, Walter Vickers (guitar), Rodney Taylor (drums), Billy Hill (who went by the name of Billy Proctor) and Rudolph Johnson. Vickers and Taylor started the group while they were with the United States Marine Corps, stationed in Japan.
"Easier Said Than Done", which climbed to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, was performed by four Marines, not including co-writer William Linton, stationed at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina. Linton said that the beat was inspired by the sound of multiple teletype machines, noisy mechanical beasts pounding out copy in the base's communications room. In 1962, a demo scored them a recording contract with Roulette Records. Recruiting lead singer Anita Humes, they recorded the song (Roulette 4494) in less than five minutes.
Three months after "Easier Said Than Done" charted in June, The Essex had another top 20 hit with the follow-up song, "A Walkin' Miracle" (Roulette 4515) in September 1963. "She's Got Everything" was another charting song. Their Marine duties made it hard for the group to take advantage of their hits; for example, before long, Johnson was shipped to Okinawa.
The vinyl recordings are collector's items. A "best-of" CD was released by Sequel Records in 1995
The Essex were 2) a little known surf band with a lone masterpiece single "Cemetary Stomp" b/w "Pray for Surf" (1963).

And it´s more than I can bear,
I don´t know baby,
Maybe it´s all in my mind, all in my mind.
I know that I´ve been true,
But honey sweetie baby what about you?
I don´t know baby,
We´ve been going steady so long,
I´d never dream you would ever do me wrong,
I knew I was yours and I thought you were mine,
And that every little thing was so fine.
Whoa darling, I´d hate to see,
Someone else with you other than me,
I don´t know baby,
Maybe it´s all in my mind, all in my mind
Oh yes, it´s all in my mind.
The lyrics to The Essex's song In My Dreams convey a sense of uncertainty and doubt that the singer is experiencing in their relationship. The first stanza suggests that the singer anguishes over whether or not their partner cares about them as much as they do. The repetition of the phrase "maybe it's all in my mind" seems to indicate that the singer is grappling with feelings of insecurity and self-doubt, perhaps even questioning their own perception of reality.
The second verse reveals that the singer has been faithful in their relationship, but they fear that their partner may not be reciprocating. The use of endearments such as "honey sweetie baby" shows that the singer still cares deeply for their loved one, but they are overtaken by the fear that their partner may be cheating. The lines "I knew I was yours and I thought you were mine, And that every little thing was so fine" suggest that there may have been a change in the relationship, and the singer is now struggling to come to terms with it.
The final verse reveals the singer's deepest fear - the thought of someone else being with their partner. The line "Oh yes it's all in my mind" seems to point to the possibility that the singer is creating a scenario in their mind, and the anxieties may not be rooted in reality. Overall, the lyrics showcase the uncertainty and self-doubt that one may feel in a relationship, and how it can take a toll on someone emotionally.
