1) There are some elements of snotty indie garage in The Fags’ sound – raw edges, loud volumes, and of course, the kind of tongue in cheek that leads you to name your band “The Fags” – but, ultimately, the music on this Detroit trio’s new CD is power pop pure and simple. The harmonies are pleasing, the hairpin turns of phrase clever, the hooks insistent, the chord changes both brainy and intuitive. If it wasn’t for the cranked amps and the fuzzed out vocals, you’d almost, at times think they were Cheap Trick. Which is obviously what they want – these Fags have studied long and hard in the school of power pop, figuring out the changes, vocal intervals, and chord voicing’s that make it what it is and applying them, thoroughly and cleverly, to music that aches for it to be 1978 again. At their best moments, though, it works: you get the eerie impression you’re listening, through a busted car stereo speaker, to some 70’s AM radio station that never was. By the time the harmonies at the end of “List” – catchy in a way that’s just this side of cloying – kick in, there’s a catch in your throat, a shake in your knee and a question rattling through your brain: just how the hell did they do that?
2) The Fags was an early band of Eugene Hütz in the mid-90s.
3) The Fags are a band from Perth, Western Australia, who are currently doing a lot of gigs. They were recently praised by Eddie Vedder at a Perth Pearl Jam concert as being pretty cool. The band's stand-out tune for the time being is "I Think I'm A Fag". The Fags are:
LOUIS MILES
TONY CHIOVITTI
KT RUMBLE
TONY POLA (formerly of Beasts of Bourbon and other bands)

And you hope at any minute, he'll call, make everything alright
All your friends are out, hopping bar to bar
And you're all dolled up, like a movie star
Grab the keys off the counter, check the mirror on the way out
You don't need a reason if it's feeling right
Got the world around your finger, don't get wrapped too tight
Like a rock star every Saturday night
Well, she caught you look a little too long at a friend last night
And you wonder if it's too soon to call, she might be looking to fight
All her friends are out, hopping bar to bar
And she's all dolled up, like a movie star
Grab your keys off the counter, check the mirror on the way out
And you don't need a reason if it's feeling right
Got the world around your finger, don't get wrapped too tight
Name spelled out in a million lights
Like a rock star on a Saturday, star on a Saturday, yeah on a Saturday night
You're a rock star on a Saturday night
You're a rock star on a Saturday night
You're a rock star on a Saturday night, Saturday night
Saturday night, Saturday night
You're a rock star on a Saturday night
Saturday night, Saturday night...
The Fags's song "Rockstar" is an ode to the freedom and excitement of a Saturday night out on the town. The lyrics depict a scene of a person who is all dressed up with nowhere to go, hoping for a phone call from someone special to make everything alright. Meanwhile, their friends are out partying, and they feel left behind. However, they soon grab their keys and head out into the night, feeling invincible and like they have the world at their fingertips. The lyrics caution against getting too wrapped up in the moment and losing oneself in the fame and glitz associated with being a rockstar. The chorus repeats the refrain that on this particular Saturday night, the singer is - in their own way - a rockstar.
The lyrics of "Rockstar" suggest a certain bravado and nonchalance, but beneath the surface is an insecurity and longing for connection. The singer hopes for the phone call that will change everything and is unsure if they've made a mistake that could lead to a fight with a significant other. This speaks to the universal human experiences of desire for acceptance and fear of rejection. Overall, "Rockstar" is a catchy and upbeat celebration of living in the moment and enjoying life's simple pleasures.
